However, the Gospel of John retains a fact historically relevant: Jesus was in Jerusalem during the Feast of the Dedication, popularly known as the Festival of Lights. This detail is not secondary. This tradition is formulated centuries later, in the Talmud (Shabbat 21b). His absence in the gospels is not an omission, but a true reflection of the early stage of the tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jesus and Hanukkah in the Gospel of John<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The only gospel that mentions Hanukkah<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>John 10:22-23 says explicitly:<br>\u201cIt was celebrated in Jerusalem the Feast of the Dedication. It was winter. And Jesus walked in the Temple, in the Portico of Solomon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This passage confirms three historic data key:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hanukkah was a holiday recognized and established<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jesus participated in the festive calendar jewish<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>His teaching is carried out in the space of the Temple<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>John does not describe domestic rituals or turning lights on houses because, at that historical moment, Hanukkah was not yet shifted from the Temple to the home, a phenomenon that will happen after the year 70.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Teaching 1: visible light as a spiritual principle<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The teaching of the lamp<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus teaches us repeatedly:<br>\u201cNo one lights a lamp to hide it, but puts it on a lampstand, and it gives light to everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This principle appears in Matthew 5:15, Luke 8:16, and Luke 11:33.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Relationship with Hanukkah<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>In the rabbinic tradition later, Hanukkah is defined by the principle of <em>pirsumei nisa<\/em>, to make public the miracle. Therefore:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The light is placed in front of the door or the window<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Must be visible from the public domain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the halachah later establishes technical details, the principle is the same that Jesus teaches us: the light is not hidden, manifest. This teaching fits perfectly with the symbolism of Hanukkah, especially in the context of the Temple, where the light had a national dimension and the spiritual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Teaching 2: leadership as a service, and the symbolism of the shamash<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The shamash in Hanukkah<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>In practice rabbinic introduces an additional light, the <em>shamash<\/em>, whose function is to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Turn on the other lights<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allow the practical use of your light<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not to count as the main light of the mitzvah<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your value is not in their status, but in his service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The teaching of Jesus<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus says:<br>\u201cWhoever would be great among you must be your servant... for the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This logic coincides with the function of the <em>shamash<\/em>: gives light to others, is consumed for others to shine and does not seek the limelight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The right hidden<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>The jewish tradition later developed the figure of the righteous hidden, the one that holds the light of the world without recognition. Although this idea does not belong to the first century, works as a theological interpretation rear consistent with the symbolism of the <em>shamash<\/em> and with the service message taught by Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mishnah, oral teaching and the style of Jesus<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What it means to Mishnah<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Mishnah<\/em> it means teaching transmitted by repetition: oral instruction is recorded, discussed and applied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jesus as a jewish master<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it cannot be classified technically as <em>tanna<\/em> editorial, Jesus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Teaches through parables<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Uses aphorisms short<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Interprets the Torah<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Discussion questions hal\u00e1jicas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All this is fully situated within the world of the jewish wise men of his time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pharisees, Hillel and Shamai: by undoing a historical myth<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The error of \u201cJesus antifariseo\u201d<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Submit to Jesus as an enemy of the self-righteousness is historically incorrect. He, himself, recognizes his authority, interpretation, stating that the scribes and pharisees sit in the chair of Moses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus shares:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The belief in the resurrection<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The use of oral interpretation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The recognition of the judicial authority<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>His criticism is ethical and moral, not institutional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hillel and Shamai<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the postures of Jesus coincide more with the spirit of Hillel \u2014mercy and inclusion\u2014 that with the interpretations most strict associated to the school of Shamai. It is likely that their disputes were with the disciples radicalized and not with the original teachers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hanukkah, Jesus and the light in the face of war<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Hanukkah is not a party orderly explicitly in the written Torah. Even so:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It was accepted by the pharisees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was experienced by the people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was assumed by Jesus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The message that emerges both of Hanukkah as of the teaching of Jesus is not the exaltation of the war, but the light of the Torah, the spiritual faithfulness, education as transformation and the silent service in front of the armed power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus of Nazareth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>He participated in the jewish calendar live<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Taught within the framework of the Second Temple<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Used symbols of light consistent with Hanukkah<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Taught as the sages of his generation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was not antifariseo, but a jewish master critical of the school of Shamai and other radical groups and nationalists.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Hanukkah, read from the gospels and jewish sources, it is not a marginal note, but a key scenario for understanding Jesus as a teacher jew of the first century, whose light did not hide, but rather sought to enlighten others, even at the expense of himself.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three of Jesus ' teachings about Hanukkah that few know<\/p>","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":1524,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[691,692],"class_list":{"0":"post-1523","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-protocristianismo","8":"tag-jesus-y-januca","9":"tag-jesus-y-la-fiesta-de-las-luces"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
