Usually translated as «Mira»This expression introduces one of the fundamental teachings of the Torah: human beings constantly face a choice between two paths, one that leads to blessing and another that leads to curse.

At first glance, the command seems like a simple invitation to observe. However, both the biblical text and interpretive tradition show that "see" It goes far beyond physical perception. Reeh invites us to develop a perspective capable of understanding moral reality, discerning the consequences of decisions, and contemplating that which still remains hidden from the senses.

This dimension has led numerous commentators to wonder if the verb See (ra’á, "see") It can be related to spiritual vision, prophecy, or even the perception of angels and other invisible realities. The Jewish tradition's answer is much more nuanced than is often assumed.

WATCH THE VIDEO IN SPANISH OF THE PARASHAT RE'EH 2026

What does the word Re'eh really mean?

The Hebrew word Re'eh comes from the root See, whose basic meaning is seeIn Deuteronomy 11:26 it appears as a singular masculine imperativeThat is, a direct order:

"See, today I set before you a blessing and a curse."

Although many translations simply retain the verb "to look," Hebrew has a much broader semantic field. Depending on the context, See It can mean:

see with the eyes;

observe carefully;

to try;

to recognize a reality;

to understand intellectually;

discern;

consider the consequences of an action.

From a philological point of view, nothing in this verse indicates that Moses is granting a supernatural ability to see spiritual beings. The command consists of understand clearly the decision that Israel faces.

WATCH THE VIDEO IN ENGLISH OF THE PARASHAT RE'EH 2026

Re'eh doesn't talk about clairvoyance

The mandate has sometimes been interpreted as «mira» It could imply some kind of extraordinary spiritual vision. However, the biblical context points in another direction.

Moses does not invite the people to contemplate angels, spirits, or invisible phenomena. What he presents to Israel are two concrete possibilities:

the blessing, the fruit of obedience to the commandments;

the curse, a consequence of breaking the pact.

The requested vision is not paranormal, but moral.

The people must learn to perceive now that whose effects will only be fully visible in the future.

The three levels of vision in the Jewish tradition

Although It’s While not describing a prophetic experience, rabbinic literature developed a profound reflection on the different ways of "seeing." From this, three levels can be distinguished.

1. Physical vision

It is ordinary perception made through the senses.

This is the most basic meaning of the verb See, used thousands of times in the Tanakh to describe that which the eyes perceive directly.

2. The intellectual or spiritual vision

A second level appears when "see" means grasp.

It is not about observing an object, but about grasping a truth with the same clarity with which one observes something in front of one's eyes.

A classic example appears in Ecclesiastes:

"My heart saw much wisdom and knowledge."

Naturally, the heart does not have eyes.

The expression indicates that intelligence came to deeply understand reality.

This idea will be fundamental for medieval commentators such as Rabbenu Bahya and also for Ramban, who will speak of "eye of the intellect" (ayin ha-sejel), that is, the ability to contemplate moral truth beyond appearances.

3. The prophetic vision

The third level belongs exclusively to the realm of revelation.

Here, "seeing" no longer means understanding through intellectual effort, but receiving divine communication through:

visions;

dreams;

symbols;

interior images;

prophetic revelations.

This type of perception depends entirely on God's initiative and constitutes a distinct category from intellectual understanding.

Therefore, Jewish tradition insists on not confusing the exhortation of It’s with the experience of the prophets.

Why does the Torah specifically use the verb "to see"?

It might seem sufficient to say:

"Listen."

However, the Torah deliberately chooses the verb "see".

The reason is profoundly educational.

Seeing implies a degree of certainty far superior to the simple knowledge received from others.

When a person sees something with their own eyes, many doubts disappear.

Moses' teaching aims precisely at that: that Israel comes to recognize moral reality with the same certainty with which it recognizes a visible object.

Obeying out of habit is not enough.

Obedience must be accompanied by understanding.

A characteristic formula of Deuteronomy

The use of It’s This is not an isolated case.

Throughout Deuteronomy the expression appears repeatedly:

"Look, I have set before you..."

"Look, I have shown you..."

"Mira, I'll hand them over..."

In all these cases, the verb functions as a call to attention.

It is equivalent to saying:

pay attention;

Understand what's in front of you;

carefully consider the situation;

He recognizes the importance of the decision.

The word always introduces a decisive moment within the teaching of Moses.

The choice between two paths

The opening of Parashat Re'eh functions as the great threshold of the legislative block of Deuteronomy.

Before beginning the extensive exposition of the laws, Moses reminds us that all the commandments have a purpose.

These are not arbitrary rules.

They represent two different ways of building a life.

Therefore he places two roads before the people:

one leads to blessing;

The other leads to damnation.

The decision belongs to the human being.

The function of the mandate «Mira» It consists precisely in developing the ability to perceive the consequences before they appear.

It does not invite us to contemplate the invisible, but to recognize the moral structure that sustains reality.

The first verse of Parashat Re'eh summarizes one of the great principles of biblical Judaism: True vision consists not only in seeing with the eyes, but in clearly understanding that which determines human destiny..

Rabbinic tradition expands on this idea by distinguishing between physical vision, intellectual vision, and prophetic vision, but always maintaining one fundamental difference: the imperative. It’s It does not grant supernatural powers, but rather urges the development of a conscience capable of discerning between good and evil before acting.

Why does the Torah say "Re'eh" in the singular and "before you" in the plural?

One of the most striking grammatical details with which the Parashat Re’eh It has attracted the attention of commentators for centuries. In just a few words, the text unexpectedly changes from singular to plural:

“Look, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse.”
(Deuteronomy 11:26)

At first glance, it might seem like a simple stylistic variation. However, Jewish tradition found in this change a profound lesson about individual responsibility, the communal dimension of the covenant, and how each person participates in the collective destiny of Israel.

An apparent grammatical anomaly

The verse begins with a command addressed to a single person:

Re’eh — Re’eh
«Mira.»

But immediately afterwards the discourse changes:

Before you — lifnejem
"Before you."

The question arises naturally:

Who is Moses talking to?

To an individual?

To the entire nation?

Or both at the same time?

The great commentators offer different, though complementary, answers.

Ibn Ezra: the decision begins with each individual

The comment of Ibn Ezra It is brief, but extraordinarily profound.

As he explains, Moses speaks to the entire nation, but uses the singular because Every Israelite must personally hear the exhortation.

The alliance belongs to the entire people, but obedience can never be delegated.

Each person decides for themselves.

Each individual listens to the command as if God were speaking directly to him.

From this perspective, the plural simply reminds us that the consequences of those personal decisions end up affecting the entire community.

Collective responsibility always begins with an individual choice.

Rabbenu Bahya and the "eye of the intellect"

One of the most interesting developments appears in the interpretation of Rabbenu Bahya.

For this medieval commentator, the singular does not respond solely to a grammatical issue.

It has a much deeper spiritual meaning.

As he explains, the blessing and the curse can be heard by the entire crowd, but Not everyone understands them in the same way..

Only those who develop what they call the eye of the intellect (ayin ha-sejel) manages to perceive the true dimension of the message.

The vision that Re'eh speaks of does not belong to the senses.

It is an inner capacity to discover the moral logic that governs the universe.

That is why Rabbenu Bahya relates this passage to the verse from Ecclesiastes:

"My heart saw much wisdom and knowledge."

The heart has no eyes.

Intelligence, however, can attain such clear understanding that Scripture describes it using the verb "to see."

This idea will be crucial for later understanding the difference between intellectual vision and prophetic vision.

Seeing beyond appearances

According to Rabbenu Bahya, most people only observe immediate events.

Come prosperity.

They foresee difficulties.

They see success or failure.

But the wise man tries to discover something deeper:

the relationship between human actions and their spiritual consequences.

True vision consists of learning to see what still remains hidden.

Not because it is physically invisible.

But because it demands reflection.

In this sense, Re'eh invites the believer to develop an increasingly mature moral perception.

Sforno: life never stays in between

The comment of Baking It approaches the verse from another perspective.

For him, the command "Look" means:

"Observe carefully that your life will never remain in a neutral position."

Human existence always moves in one direction.

There is no absolute stability.

Each decision slowly brings a person closer to the blessing or to the loss of that blessing.

The alliance, therefore, does not present two abstract possibilities.

It presents two real trajectories.

Every choice has consequences.

Even when these are not immediately visible.

Blessing is much more than prosperity

Sforno also points out an important aspect.

The biblical blessing does not simply consist of possessing material goods.

It represents a complete wholeness.

It involves living according to the purpose established by God.

The curse, on the other hand, should not be reduced solely to suffering.

It is the progressive loss of that fullness.

That is why Moses commands us to "look" before choosing.

Only those who contemplate the end of the road can truly understand the value of their present decisions.

Kli Yakar: a single action can change the world

The comment from Kli Yakar introduce an additional element.

Drawing inspiration from the Talmud, he explains that each person should see themselves as if the entire world were perfectly balanced between merit and guilt.

In that imaginary situation, a single action can tip the entire scales.

Hence, the verse combines singular and plural.

The singular reminds us that each individual possesses freedom.

The plural teaches that no decision is limited solely to the private sphere.

Every action generates effects that reach the community.

Responsibility is never exclusively personal.

The collective dimension of the alliance

This interpretation acquires special importance within biblical thought.

Israel does not appear solely as a collection of individuals.

It also constitutes a collective body.

Each member influences the common destiny.

Therefore, the choice made by one person can become a source of blessing for many.

Or, on the contrary, it can contribute to the spiritual deterioration of the whole.

The Torah constantly unites both dimensions.

There is no opposition between individual and community.

Both are part of the same pact.

The parable of the crossroads according to the Sifre

The Sifré Devarim It offers an explanation through a very simple image.

Imagine a traveler arriving at a fork in the road.

From the point where he is, both paths appear similar.

However, there is a difference.

You start out comfortable, but end up covered in thorns.

The other one is difficult at first, although it eventually leads to a clear path.

The traveler is unaware of the outcome.

He needs someone with more perspective to tell him which one to choose.

That is precisely what the Torah does.

It does not eliminate freedom.

Nor does it force the walker.

It simply shows him what he cannot yet see.

The difference between information and wisdom

The parable of the Sifre contains a lasting lesson.

Many human decisions are made by looking only at the immediate benefit.

The Torah invites us to broaden our horizons.

To see means to discover the end from the beginning.

Don't be fooled by first appearances.

Understanding that the seemingly easiest path can lead to destruction, while the initial effort can open the door to a much fuller life.

This ability is precisely what constitutes biblical wisdom.

Singular and plural: a lesson for all generations

The different interpretations agree on one essential idea.

Changing from singular to plural is not a grammatical error.

Nor was it a coincidence.

This is a literary device through which the Torah recalls two inseparable principles:

Each person is individually responsible for their decisions;

These decisions never remain isolated, because they end up affecting the entire community.

The alliance begins in the heart of each individual, but its fruits always reach the entire people.

The beginning of Parashat Re'eh shows that human freedom has a much deeper dimension than it seems.

The mandate «Mira» It personally challenges each believer, inviting them to develop a vision capable of discovering the future consequences of present decisions.

The great commentators —Ibn Ezra, Rabbenu Bahya, Sforno, Kli Yakar and the Sifre— agree that true vision consists of learning to contemplate reality from the perspective of the covenant.

It's not about acquiring extraordinary powers.

It is about educating intelligence, conscience, and moral responsibility to recognize that each individual choice contributes to building the collective destiny of Israel.

Parashat Re’eh: significado, profecía y visión
