On the one hand, there is a calendrical astronomy necessary to determine months, seasons, and festivals. On the other hand, we find rabbinic debates about the smeareda symbolic cosmology developed especially in Sefer Yetzirah and an extensive philosophical and halakhic controversy about astral influence and the legality of consulting astrologers.

This distinction is essential for understanding Rosh Hashanah, the Hebrew months and their signs without attributing to the Torah teachings that belong to later texts.

What is Hebrew astrology?

The expression “Hebrew astrology” can be used to describe the set of Jewish discourses related to celestial bodies, the smeared and the qualities of time. However, it does not designate a uniform revealed science or a mandatory birth system.

The Torah does not assign Aries to Nisan or Libra to Tishrei. Nor does it relate Hebrew letters to the twelve months, nor does it prescribe natal charts, astrological houses, or planetary rulerships.

The explicit correspondence between twelve months, twelve signs and twelve letters appears in Sefer Yetzirah, a post-biblical work that organizes these relationships within a much broader cosmology.

That's why, when we talk about Tishrei and LibraThe fundamental source of that correspondence is not the Pentateuch, but Sefer YetzirahThe Torah simply refers to Tishrei as "the seventh month" and establishes on its first day a Zichron Teruah and a I am two..

SEE THE VIDEO OF THIS CLASS IN SPANISH

Astronomy, astrology, and astral theology

To understand the topic, three concepts must be separated.

The astronomy It studies celestial bodies and their movements. Within Judaism, it also has a fundamental calendrical function, because it allows for the correct determination of months, seasons, and holidays.

The astrology It interprets certain celestial configurations as indicators or causes of events, predispositions, or destinies.

The astral theologyHowever, it attributes divinity or independent power to celestial bodies. The Torah rejects this possibility: the Sun, the Moon, and the stars belong to the created order and should not become objects of worship.

This difference allows us to formulate a basic rule: Studying the calendar is not the same as practicing astrology; recognizing zodiac symbols does not mean worshipping the stars; and using the signs as instruments of spiritual reflection does not prove that they produce physical effects.

Mazal: much more than “luck”

The Hebrew word smeared It can acquire different meanings depending on the context: constellation, influence, birth configuration, ruling planet, destiny, or fortune. Its plural, mazalot, can designate constellations or signs.

The Tanakh has vocabulary related to the sky and constellations, but this does not mean that the Torah teaches natal astrology.

The modern concept of “energy” should also not be automatically applied to ancient sources. Classical texts speak of smeared, koas, hashpaá, provision, decree or mediation.

Therefore, when speaking of the “energy” of a Hebrew month, it is more accurate to understand it as a symbolic quality and a possibility for ethical workexcept when a specific source expressly claims a literal astral influence.

SEE THE VIDEO OF THIS CLASS IN ENGLISH

Is there a mazal for Israel?

One of the major debates appears in Shabbat 156a-156b.

The Talmud holds different positions. Rabbi Chanina maintains that there is smeared for Israel, while Rabbi Yochanan states ein mazal leYisrael: “There is no mazal for Israel.”

The discussion is much deeper than a simple opposition between believing or not believing in astrology. Even when sources acknowledge certain biases, they don't turn those tendencies into a moral judgment.

The Talmudic example of someone born under Mars is particularly significant. The same blood-related inclination can manifest in entirely different ways. Predisposition does not determine whether a person will act justly or unjustly.

The formula could be summarized as follows:

predisposition plus choice, never fatalism.

Abraham and the possibility of overcoming destiny

The same Shabbat tractate interprets Genesis 15:5 through an extraordinary scene: Abraham had observed astrologically that he would have no offspring, but God commands him to abandon that astrology.

Teaching does not necessarily imply the disappearance of all natural order. It affirms something more important: The pact and divine will are not confined within astral calculation.

This idea reappears when Shabbat 156b relates predictions of death that ultimately do not come to pass thanks to acts of charity.

The message is not about offering a technique to "break" horoscopes. The teaching is ethical: mitzvah, tzedakah, and human responsibility take precedence over any fatalistic interpretation of destiny.

Four Jewish perspectives on astrology

The sources studied allow us to distinguish four main models.

Maimonides represents rationalist negation. He rejects astrology as a true science and radically differentiates between demonstrable astronomy and astrology.

Abraham ibn Ezra admits a subordinate natural influence. The underworld may receive celestial influences, but these remain subject to God.

Nachmanides represents a position that recognizes the possible existence of natural knowledge related to the heavens, but rejects that Israel should submit its decisions to diviners.

Finally, within a mystical interpretationThe stars can be conceived as subordinate channels within a system of divine providence. They are not independent powers nor authors of destiny.

The conclusion is clear: there is no single Jewish doctrine on the mechanism of smearedYes, there is a transversal limit: no sign can become a god, no predisposition justifies sin, and no horoscope can replace the Torah.

The twelve Hebrew months and the twelve signs

Sefer Yetzirah It organizes reality through three related dimensions: Olamworld; Shana, year; and Néfesh, person.

The twelve simple letters are linked to twelve signs, twelve months, twelve faculties, and different organs. The Gra version used in the study establishes the following correspondences:

Hebrew month

Lubricated

Western sign

Letter

Faculty

Nisan

Tale

Aries

ה, he

Speaks

Iya

Shor

Taurus

And, vav

Thought

Sivan

Theomim

Gemini

ז, zayin

Motion

Tamuz

Pan

Cancer

H, jet

Vista

Of

Arié

Leo

ט, close

Hearing

Elul

Betula

Virgo

י, iodine

Action

Tishrei

Moznaim

Libra

ל, lámed

Tashmish

Marjeshvan

Akrav

Scorpio

נ, in

Smell

Kislev

It may be late.

Sagittarius

ס, same

Dream

Tevet

Gdí

Capricorn

ע, prayer

Anger

'shevat

Law

Aquarium

צ, tzadi

Intake

Adar

These

Fish

ק, person

Risa

These correspondences do not constitute a monthly horoscope. The scheme proposes a symbolic relationship between language, cosmos, time, and person.

Nisan and Tishrei: the two great beginnings

The Hebrew calendar presents a particularly interesting phenomenon.

The Torah establishes to Nisan as the beginning of the months. Sefer Yetzirah He relates it to Talé, Aries, the first sign of the zodiacal sequence.

The Mishnah, on the other hand, establishes the first of Tishrei as the new year for the years and other legal cycles. Sefer Yetzirah relates Tishrei to Moznayim, Pound.

There is no contradiction. Nisan begins the order of the months and the festivals, while Tishrei functions as the beginning of the annual count in other areas.

This creates two poles: Nisan-Aries and Tishrei-Libra, located opposite each other on the zodiacal circle and roughly related to the two equinoxes.

Rosh Hashanah: Tishrei under the sign of the scales

This correspondence acquires special depth when we get to Rosh Hashanah.

Sefer Yetzirah bind Tishrei with Moznaim“scales,” that is, Libra. At the same time, the Mishnah teaches that on Rosh Hashanah the inhabitants of the world pass before God, while the Gemara develops the image of universal judgment.

Symbolic coincidence is powerful, but it must be interpreted accurately.

Sefer Yetzirah It does not say that Rosh Hashanah is a day of judgment because the Sun is in Libra.

The scales can become a spiritual symbol of judgment, but not its cause.

The Bible itself repeatedly uses scales as an image of justice. In this way, Moznayim can be integrated into a Hebrew reading: The measure belongs to the Judge, not to the celestial mechanism.

The Libra tikkun in Tishrei

Western astrology associates Libra with balance, relationships, reciprocity, contracts, and beauty.

Tishrei takes these categories in another direction.

Rosh Hashanah introduces judgment. Yom Kippur leads to the repair of the covenant. Sukkot opens existence to fragility, hospitality, and joy. Shemini Atzeret finally concentrates the intimacy of the encounter.

The Libra tikkun It then consists of moving from neutrality to justice and from complacency to agreement.

It's not enough to seek balance. We must ask ourselves what is fair.

Preserving relationships is not enough. We need to ask ourselves what responsibility do they entail?.

The shofar does not turn Tishrei into Aries

There is a confusion that must be avoided.

On Rosh Hashanah, it is recommended to use a ram's horn in connection with the remembrance of the Akedah, the binding of Isaac. Since Aries is also represented by a ram, it could be assumed that Rosh Hashanah corresponds to Aries.

That's not the case.

Talé-Aries corresponds to Nisan. Moznayim-Libra corresponds to Tishrei.

The ram of the shofar belongs to the biblical and liturgical universe of the Akedah; it does not modify the zodiacal correspondence of the month.

The twelve signs and their Hebrew tikkun

The study proposes a pedagogical reading in which each archetype finds a potential field for spiritual correction. It is not a literal table transmitted by a single authority, but a synthesis constructed from Sefer Yetzirah, the festivities and different ethical texts.

April / Aries: Transforming impulse into responsible proclamation. Freedom must be expressed through word and deed.

Taurus / Taurus: transform rigidity into constancy and possessiveness into receptivity.

Sivan / Gemini: orient movement and multiplicity towards the Torah and the covenant.

Tammuz / Cancer: correct the gaze, distinguishing perception from fantasy and protection from confinement.

By / Leo: moving from the need to be seen to the ability to listen: grief, warning, and comfort.

He/Virgo: transform analysis and criticism into concrete actions of teshuvah.

Tishrei / Libra: replace neutrality with justice and complacency with responsibility towards the pact.

Marjeshvan / Scorpio: transform suspicion into discernment and intensity into fidelity.

Kislev / Sagittarius: to unite expansion and hope with interiority and awareness of limits.

Tevet / Capricorn: to subject discipline, structure, and authority to moral scrutiny.

Shevat / Aquarius: to bring big ideas into the concrete care of creation.

Adar / Pisces: to distinguish joy from escapism and to transform celebration into generosity and responsibility.

What does Hebrew astrology share with Western astrology?

Both systems use the same twelve signs and maintain the same basic zodiacal order. There are also relationships between the cosmos, time, and the individual.

But the differences are decisive.

The Hebrew month follows a lunar cycle, while the tropical zodiac sign corresponds to a solar sector. Sefer Yetzirah It relates months to letters and faculties, while Western astrology uses elements, modalities, and planetary rulerships.

Above all, the Jewish reading introduces a different question.

Not only:

What am I like?

But:

What should I correct?

That's where the concept of tikún.

The Hebrew correction of astrology

Judaism did not invent a completely different set of twelve zodiacal figures. The repertoire of Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Bow, Kid, Water Bearer, and Fish originated in the ancient world and was known and adapted by Jewish communities.

The fundamental transformation occurs in the theological meaning.

The study identifies five movements: demythologizing the stars, eliminating fatalism, subjecting archetypes to moral evaluation, sanctifying time through commandments, and placing God—not the cosmos—at the center.

Therefore, adding Hebrew letters to a Western birth chart is not enough to turn it into "Kabbalah".

Rosh Hashanah versus astrological determinism

Rosh Hashanah finally offers one of the most profound answers to the problem of destiny.

Judicial astrology seeks to predict events through celestial configurations.
