However, to understand the meaning of the Messiah according to the TorahFirst, it is necessary to return to the Hebrew meaning of the term and to the purpose that the Torah itself establishes for Israel.

The last parashah of the Torah, Vezot Will Have—Deuteronomy 33:1–34:12—It offers a particularly significant framework. Therein appear the blessings pronounced by Moses upon the tribes of Israel, the sovereignty of HaShem, the Torah as a permanent inheritance, the mission of Judah, the strength of Joseph, and the hope of national restoration.

Although the word Messiah —mashíaj— It does not appear explicitly in Vezot Haberajá, the parashah brings together several foundations that allow us to understand what the Messiah means within the Jewish tradition.

What does the word Messiah really mean?

The Hebrew word Messiah —mashíaj— procede de la raíz משח, que significa "young"Its basic meaning is, therefore, "anointed": a person consecrated or invested to fulfill a specific function.

In the Tanakh, mashíaj It does not refer exclusively to the future redeemer. The term can be applied to priests, kings, and other people chosen for a specific mission.

For this reason, the original meaning of “Messiah” is not simply “savior,” but "anointed".

With the development of prophetic and rabbinic hope, the expression המלך המשיח —haMlej haMasshiaj, “the Messianic king”— He went on to specifically identify the future descendant of David related to the restoration of Israel.

SEE THE VIDEO OF THIS CLASS IN SPANISH

The Messiah does not replace HaShem

One of the central principles for understanding the Messiah according to the Torah is to distinguish between the agent of redemption and its source.

Vezot Haberajá declares:

"There is no one like the God of Yeshurun, who rides through the heavens to help you and in His majesty through the clouds."
—Deuteronomy 33:26

And later he states:

"Blessed are you, Israel. It is presented as the heritage of the congregation of Jacob.

This has a fundamental consequence for understanding the messianic concept: The Messiah does not come to replace the Torah of Moses.but to act within the history and covenant of Israel.

The traditional messianic idea is thus related to the restoration, not the abolition, of the Torah.

The Messiah and the sovereignty of HaShem

Deuteronomy 33:5 declares:

"And there was a king in Jeshurun, when the leaders of the people gathered together, the tribes of Israel assembled."

This verse links kingship with the gathering and unity of the tribes.

Within the framework of Vezot Haberajá, a significant structure appears: Israel united, the Torah at the center, and the sovereignty of HaShem above human government.

Therefore, even when tradition speaks of the future Messiah king, his authority does not replace the reign of HaShem.

The Messiah rules; HaShem continues to be the true King.

Judah and the future Davidic king

The blessing of Judah contains another important element:

"Hear, O Lord, the voice of Judah, and bring him to his people; let his hands fight for him, and be your help against his adversaries."
—Deuteronomy 33:7

The verse does not directly mention the Messiah. However, Judah is associated with leadership, combat, gathering with his people, and divine help.

Later, the dynasty of David would emerge precisely from Judah.

Therefore, the traditional messianic expectation will end up focusing especially on Messiah ben David, the Messiah descendant of the house of David.

Yosef and the preparation of redemption

Vezot Haberajá also dedicates a powerful blessing to Yosef:

"His firstborn, his bull, possesses majesty; his horns are like the horns of the wild ox. With them he will gore the peoples together to the ends of the earth; they are the myriads of Ephraim and the thousands of Manasseh."
—Deuteronomy 33:17

In its direct sense, the passage represents the strength of Yosef, Ephraim, and Manashe.

With the subsequent development of rabbinic tradition, Yosef also became associated with a preparatory dimension of redemption.

From there arises the tradition about Mashhiaj ben Yosef, a figure linked primarily to aggadic, midrashic and later mystical sources.

Messiah ben Yosef and Messiah ben David

Jewish tradition spoke of two figures related to different stages of the redemptive process:

Mashhiaj ben Yosef It primarily represents the preparation for redemption. It is associated with Joseph and Ephraim, with combat, national preservation, and, in some sources, with suffering and death.

Messiah ben DavidOn the other hand, he represents the culmination of redemption. He comes from Judah and the house of David and occupies the central place in the halakhic definition of the Messiah king.

These are not two deities nor two rival saviors. They are traditions about different roles within a process of redemption whose true origin remains in HaShem.

Mashiach ben Yosef: the suffering Messiah

The biblical story of Yosef itself establishes a remarkable pattern.

Yosef:

He is rejected by his brothers;

is thrown into a well;

is sold;

descend to Egypt;

is unjustly accused;

He ends up in jail;

remains hidden;

ultimately becomes an instrument to preserve his family.

His story can be summarized as rejection, descent, concealment, suffering, preservation, and recognition.

Later, some rabbinic sources developed a messianic figure associated with Yosef or Ephraim.

Sukkah 52a, commenting on Zechariah 12, records an interpretation according to which future mourning will be related to Messiah ben Yosef, who will have been killedThe same passage also preserves another interpretation of mourning, related to the destruction of the inclination to evil.

This is important because it demonstrates both the existence of the tradition of the Messiah son of Joseph and the interpretive diversity within the rabbinic sources themselves.

Does Isaiah 53 speak of a suffering Messiah?

Within Jewish tradition, Isaiah 52:13–53:12 has received various interpretations. One widely developed reading connects the servant with Israel, while some rabbinic sources apply certain verses to a messianic figure.

Sanhedrin 98b, for example, records a tradition that links the Messiah to Isaiah 53:4:

"Surely he has borne our infirmities and carried our sorrows."

However, this passage does not expressly identify that figure with Messiah ben Yosef.

Therefore, the two traditions should not automatically merge.

Messiah ben David: the king who completes redemption

The most systematic halakhic exposition on the Messiah appears in Hilyot Melayim uMilyamoteihem, by Maimonides.

There, the center of the messianic definition is the future king of the house of David.

According to this formulation, a messianic candidate must:

to belong to the house of David;

to live according to the written and oral Torah;

strengthen Israel's observance;

to fight the wars of HaShem.

If it meets these conditions, it may be considered In the name of the Messiah —bejezkát Mashíaj—That is, a presumed Messiah or messianic candidate.

But something fundamental is still missing.

How do you recognize the true Messiah?

For Maimonides, the identity of the Messiah does not depend primarily on performing miracles.

The criterion is the effective fulfillment of its mission.

The candidate attains the status of משיח ודאי —Mashíaj vadái, “Mesías confirmedado”— when he manages to complete the tasks associated with redemption, including:

succeed in their mission;

build the Sanctuary in its place;

to gather the dispersed of Israel.

The true Messiah is therefore recognized by what it actually manages to accomplish within the story.

Maimonides even recalls the precedent of Bar Kokhba, whom Rabbi Akiva considered a messianic candidate. His death before completing the redemption proved that he was not the definitive Messiah awaited.

The Messiah does not need to prove his identity with miracles.

This point is fundamental.

According to Maimonides' formulation, it is not necessary that the Messiah:

raise the dead;

suspend the laws of nature;

perform miracles;

miraculously changed the order of creation.

The decisive test is related to his lineage, his faithfulness to the Torah, and the historical fulfillment of his mission.

This also explains why the messianic era does not necessarily have to be understood as the immediate disappearance of natural laws.

The central goal is the restoration of Israel and the possibility of living fully in accordance with the Torah.

What will happen in the days of the Messiah?

The expression The Days of the Messiah —yemot haMashíaj— It means “the days of the Messiah.”

During this period, the traditional expectation includes the national restoration of Israel, the gathering of the exiles, Jerusalem as a national and spiritual center, and the restoration of the conditions necessary for the collective observance of the Torah.

The purpose is not simply to obtain wealth or political power.

For Maimonides, the wise men awaited those days so that they could freely dedicate themselves to the Torah and wisdom.

Redemption, therefore, has both national and spiritual dimensions.

Moses and the Messiah: from the first redeemer to the last

There is also an important parallel between Moshe and the future Mashiach ben David.

Moses frees Israel from Egypt, confronts Pharaoh, transmits the Torah, establishes the Mishkan, and leads the people to the Promised Land.

Mashiach ben David, within the traditional expectation, gathers the scattered, faces the obstacles of redemption, restores the observance of the Torah, rebuilds the Sanctuary, and consolidates Israel.

This does not mean that Moses and the Messiah are the same person.

Moses belongs to Levi; the Davidic Messiah belongs to Judah.

Continuity lies in the redemptive mission subordinate to HaShem and linked to the Torah.

So, what is the true meaning of the Messiah according to the Torah?

The image that emerges is different from a conception of the Messiah as a figure isolated from the people of Israel, from the Torah, or from the covenant.

Within this framework, the Messiah is part of a much broader historical purpose: the restoration of Israel under the sovereignty of HaShem.

The tradition about Mashhiaj ben Yosef It especially represents the preparatory and suffering dimension of that process. The expectation of Messiah ben David It represents its culmination through the restoration of the Davidic kingdom.

Maimonides concentrates the halakhic definition precisely in the latter.

In summary, the meaning of the Messiah can be expressed through eight fundamental principles:

Mashíaj means "anointed one".

HaShem is the true Redeemer of Israel.

The Torah of Moses remains as the heritage of Israel.

The Messiah acts within the covenant and the Torah.

Mashiach ben Yosef represents, in certain rabbinic traditions, the suffering preparation for redemption.

Mashiach ben David represents the culmination of redemption.

Maimonides' halakhic definition focuses on the Davidic king and the effective fulfillment of his mission.

Redemption leads to the reunion of Israel and the recognition of HaShem's sovereignty.

Vezot Haberajá ends the Torah, but not the historical purpose it presents.

His statement remains crucial:

"Moses commanded us the Torah, the inheritance of the congregation of Jacob."

And his conclusion places all hope of redemption under an even greater assertion:

"Blessed are you, Israel. Who is like you, a people saved by the Lord?"

From this perspective, the Messiah does not replace the God of Israel nor does he replace the Torah.
