Through it, humankind could contemplate reality “from one end of the world to the other.” However, foreseeing that this illumination could be used by morally corrupt generations, God hid it and reserved it for the righteous.

Kabbalah transformed this rabbinic teaching into one of its great symbols. Or HaGanuz It represents the original revelation of divine unity, the ability to perceive the inner purpose of creation, and a redeeming light that remains hidden within the Torah, the mitzvot, the soul, and reality itself.

It's not simply a light that existed and disappeared. It's a hidden presence that continues to sustain the world and that, under certain spiritual conditions, it can manifest itself partially.

The first light of creation

The biblical root of the concept is found in the Genesis account:

“And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. And God saw that the light was good.”

This light appears during the first day of creation, while the Sun, Moon, and stars are established only on the fourth. This difference allowed the sages to distinguish between two realities: the primordial light of the first day and the physical light of celestial bodies.

The biblical text does not directly use the expression Or HaGanuzThe concept arises from the rabbinic interpretation of the first light and, especially, from the words according to which God "separated the light from the darkness".

In its literal sense, the separation establishes the realms of day and night. In the Midrashic interpretation, however, it also means that God set aside that higher light and reserved it for a spiritually prepared humanity.

Therefore, the Or HaGanuz should not be identified with sunlight or an astronomical phenomenon.Within the mystical language of Kabbalah, light symbolizes revelation, knowledge, vitality, presence, and divine manifestation.

Or HaGanuz in the Talmud: the vision of totality

The classic rabbinic formulation appears in the treatise Hunting 12a. There, Rabbi Elazar teaches that through the light created during the first day, Adam could contemplate “from one end of the world to the other.”

When God contemplated the future generations of the Flood and Babel and their corrupt actions, He hid that light and reserved it for the righteous of the future.

What does it mean to see from one end to the other?

In Kabbalistic interpretation, this expression does not have to be reduced to a supernatural visual ability. It primarily represents a non-fragmented perception of existence.

Ordinary consciousness perceives seemingly separate events: birth and death, suffering and joy, justice and injustice. The Or HaGanuz symbolizes the possibility of understanding how the different dimensions of creation belong to a whole and move toward an ultimate purpose.

This light represents knowledge of spiritual causes, understanding of the unity hidden behind multiplicity, perception of the purpose of creation, and the ability to recognize the sacred within that which seems ordinary.

It's not simply about having more information, but about to contemplate reality from a higher level of consciousness.

Why did God hide the primordial light?

Tradition holds that the Or HaGanuz was hidden because it was not appropriate for the wicked to be able to use it.

From this teaching arises a fundamental principle: Spiritual knowledge without moral rectification can become a destructive force..

Primordial light would grant an extraordinary capacity for understanding. In a person dominated by selfishness, such knowledge could be misused. Therefore, revelation must correspond to the quality of the recipient.

This principle can be understood through the Kabbalistic relationship between or —light— and to rise -container-:

Light represents revelation or abundance from God.

The container is the creature's capacity to receive it correctly.

When the vessel is not prepared, the intensity of the revelation produces imbalance.

Concealment protects the creation from inappropriate reception.

God did not hide the Or HaGanuz because it was negative, but precisely because it represented a revelation too high for a world that had not yet been rectified.

Concealment does not mean absence

One of the essential aspects of the concept is that the The hidden light was not destroyed. Was ganuz: guarded, reserved.

The Zohar develops this idea through the image of a seed. Light remains hidden like a seed within the earth: invisible outwardly, yet active and capable of producing fruit.

Psalm 97:11 declares:

“Light is sown for the righteous, and joy for the upright in heart.”

Within this mystical interpretation, the light was placed inside creation to manifest itself at the appropriate time.

Thus, three stages can be distinguished: a primordial revelation, in which creation could be perceived from its unity; a historical period of concealment, in which the light remains veiled within nature, the Torah, and human actions; and a future revelation, in which that inner dimension will be able to fully manifest itself.

The world, therefore, It does not lack light: it lives under a hidden light.

The Or HaGanuz in the Zohar

The Zohar transforms the rabbinic teaching of primordial light into a mystical doctrine about the structure of reality.

In Terumá It is taught that this light acted openly during the first day and was then hidden for the righteous. At the same time, it is stated that those who study Torah at night can receive a "thread" of that light.

Thus arises an apparent paradox: light is reserved for the future, and yet some of its flashes can be experienced in the present.

The difference lies in the degree of revelation. The future manifestation will be complete; in history, only glimpses or vestiges of the Or HaGanuz can be received.

The hidden light within the Torah

According to Kabbalah, the Torah has different levels of interpretation. Its outer dimension contains stories, laws, and commandments; its inner dimension reveals spiritual principles related to creation and its purpose.

To say that the Or HaGanuz is “hidden in the Torah” means that a study conducted with depth, humility, and purity of intention can reveal connections that normally remain hidden.

This revelation also requires reverence for God, personal refinement, fulfillment of the mitzvot, moral rectitude, and selfless intention.

The Torah thus simultaneously becomes place of concealment and instrument of revelation.

Or HaGanuz and the sefirot

Kabbalistic literature does not uniquely and invariably identify the Or HaGanuz with a single sephirah. Its symbolism can change depending on the context.

It can be related to Jojmá, as wisdom; with Jésed, as a merciful expansion; with Tiféret, as an integrating consciousness; with Yesodas a transmission channel; and with Maljut, as a reception and manifestation of divine abundance.

There is, however, a particularly significant relationship with Yesodalso called Tzadik, “the Just”.

The verse “light is sown for the righteous” allowed the interpretation that the upper light is deposited in Yesod to be transmitted to Malchut and, from there, to the lower worlds.

This correspondence should not be transformed into an absolute formula. In Kabbalah, light passes through different sefirot and acquires characteristics linked to the level through which it manifests.

Differences between Or HaGanuz, Ein Sof and Or Ein Sof

Although these concepts are related, Or HaGanuz, Ein Sof and Or Ein Sof are not synonyms.

Ein Sof

Ein Sof“Without End” designates the infinite divine reality beyond all definition, image, or attribute. It is neither a created light nor a sephirah.

Or Ein Sof

Or Ein Sof“Light of Infinity” expresses the unlimited divine radiance. It does not describe the divine essence itself, but its manifestation or capacity to communicate existence.

Or HaGanuz

Or HaGanuz It is the primordial light hidden in relation to creation. It represents a specific form of revelation through which the unity, goodness, and purpose of the universe can be contemplated.

In summary: Ein Sof designates the infinite divine reality; Or Ein Sof, its unlimited irradiation; and Or HaGanuz, the primordial illumination reserved and hidden within creation.

Or HaGanuz and the Lurian Kabbalah

The Kabbalah of Rabbi Yitzchak Luria—the Ari—developed a cosmology based on concepts such as divine light, the tzimtzum, the containers, their rupture and the elevation of sparks.

In this system, the lights were received by containers incapable of containing them adequately. This then produced... shevirat ha-kelimThe breaking of the vessels. Sparks of holiness were scattered within reality.

Human work tikúnRectification consists of releasing and raising those sparks through mitzvot, prayer, study, and the sanctification of material existence.

Or HaGanuz and the sparks are not the same

It is important to maintain a historical and conceptual distinction:

The Or HaGanuz comes from the rabbinic teaching on the first light.

The nitzotzot or sparks are part of the Lurian system of the rupture of the containers.

Both symbols share the idea of a hidden holiness.

Later interpretations may link them, but they should not be confused.

The Or HaGanuz primarily represents a hidden total enlightenmentwhile the sparks represent fragments of holiness scattered within a broken reality.

Adam and the thirty-six hours of primordial light

Bereshit Rabá It teaches that Adam enjoyed the primordial light for thirty-six hours: twelve during Friday, twelve during Shabbat night, and twelve during Shabbat day.

When Shabbat ended, the light was withdrawn and Adam experienced darkness. Tradition relates that God then taught him how to produce fire, an episode related to the Havdalah fire blessing.

The first Shabbat would thus retain some of the original luminous consciousness. The subsequent darkness represents the beginning of historical existence, in which humanity must produce a limited light while the great light remains hidden.

Hanukkah, Or HaGanuz and the 36 lights

During the eight days of Hanukkah, candles are lit, not counting the shamasha total of 36 lights:

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 = 36

Kabbalistic and Hasidic interpretations relate these 36 lights to the 36 hours during which the primordial light shone.

The Bnei YissacharRabbi Tzvi Elimelech of Dinov expressly links the light of Hanukkah with the Or HaGanuz which illuminated Adam and was later hidden within the Torah.

This interpretation also explains the contemplative value attributed to the Hanukkah lights. They are not used for practical illumination, but as objects of contemplation and praise.

However, this correspondence belongs to a later mystical interpretation and does not constitute the original Talmudic explanation of the festival.

Or HaGanuz and the Thirty-Six Righteous Ones

The Talmud also mentions thirty-six righteous people who receive the divine presence daily.

The partnership between the 36 righteous, the 36 hours of primordial light and the 36 Hanukkah lights It constitutes a later interpretive synthesis. The original rabbinic sources present these teachings in different contexts.

Shabbat as a foretaste of future light

The thirty-six-hour tradition establishes a profound relationship between Shabbat and Or HaGanuz.

During the week, existence appears fragmented between work, needs, and worries. Shabbat allows us to temporarily contemplate creation from another perspective: as a complete work.

Therefore, it can be understood as a foreshadowing of the consciousness linked to Or HaGanuz. Creation is seen as complete, existence is received as a gift, matter can be sanctified, and time is no longer conceived solely in terms of productivity.

It does not mean that the primordial light physically reappears every Shabbat. What reappears is the possibility of to contemplate reality from the perspective of its original integrity.

Or HaGanuz, redemption and the world to come

The primordial light is reserved “for the righteous in the future.” The expression le-atid washed Depending on the text and its interpretation, it can be related to the messianic era, the world to come, the resurrection, or the final state of a rectified creation.

Redemption thus acquires a dimension that transcends any material transformation: it also implies a transformation of perception.

That which currently seems fragmented or meaningless can be viewed within a higher unity.

The future light will not necessarily introduce a reality completely alien to the present. It will reveal what was already hidden within it.

The inner dimension of the Or HaGanuz

Hasidism delved deeper into the inner dimension of this symbolism. hidden light It is not found only in the cosmos or in the future, but also in human spiritual experience.

This does not mean identifying human beings with God. It means recognizing in the soul a capacity to orient itself towards good, to recognize the truth, and to consciously relate to its divine source.

The flashes of Or HaGanuz can be expressed as clarity after confusion, deep understanding of the Torah, awareness of unity during prayer, ability to recognize the good in other people, or transformation of suffering into compassion, responsibility, and wisdom.

These experiences do not necessarily equate to the full revelation of primordial light. They can be understood as flashes adapted to the person's limited capacity.

How is the Or HaGanuz revealed?

Classical Jewish sources do not present Or HaGanuz as a magical energy that can be activated through quick formulas. Its revelation is primarily linked to the transformation of the human vessel.

Torah study

Study allows one to discover hidden spiritual dimensions within the text. The Zohar places particular emphasis on nighttime study.

Fulfillment of the mitzvot

The mitzvot connect intention, action, and material reality. From a Kabbalistic perspective, they allow holiness to be revealed within the physical world.

Moral refinement

Humility, honesty, compassion, and ego mastery prepare the vessel. Spiritual enlightenment cannot be separated from ethical responsibility.

Tefillah and contemplation

Prayer reorients consciousness towards its source and is not limited to asking for personal benefits.

Shabbat and holidays

The sacred calendar establishes moments particularly related to certain spiritual dimensions. Shabbat and Hanukkah have a special connection with the symbolism of the hidden light.

Tikún

Every action that restores justice, holiness, and harmony can reveal a dimension of that light. The person does not create the Or HaGanuz: removes that which prevents it from being perceived.

What Or HaGanuz is not

To understand the concept correctly, it is important to avoid several confusions.

It is not sunlight. Sunlight corresponds to the celestial bodies of the fourth day; Or HaGanuz is related to the first illumination of creation.

It is not the essence of God. The essence of Ein Sof is beyond description. Light functions as a symbol of revelation and relationship.

It is not identical to the Shekhinah. The Shekhinah represents the immanent divine presence and is often associated with Malkhut. It can receive or manifest light, but the two concepts are not synonymous.

It is not identical to Lurianic sparks. The sparks correspond to the system of breaking the vessels; Or HaGanuz designates the hidden primordial illumination.

It does not represent a license to attribute supernatural powers to oneself. Sources link this light to righteousness precisely because its reception demands moral responsibility.

It is not exclusively cabalistic. Its roots lie in rabbinic literature prior to the historical development of medieval Kabbalah.

Historical evolution of the concept of Or HaGanuz

The symbolism of the hidden light develops progressively.

In the TanakhLight represents creation, life, truth, justice, and salvation. Midrash and TalmudThe first light appears as a hidden illumination reserved for the righteous.

The early Kabbalists incorporated the symbolism of light into the doctrines of the sefirot and emanation. Zóhar He delved into the idea of a hidden light that sustains the world and can be partially revealed through the Torah.

Subsequently, the Kabbalah of Safed developed systems focused on the tzimtzum, the containers, the sparks and the tikúnFinally, the jasidismo He internalized these ideas and highlighted the divine presence hidden in the soul, the Torah, and everyday life.

Traditionally, the Zohar is attributed to Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and his circle. Historical and literary research places the main formation of the Zoharic corpus in Castile at the end of the 13th century. Both perspectives must be distinguished when studying the work historically.

Conclusion: The spiritual meaning of Or HaGanuz

The Or HaGanuz is the hidden primordial light through which creation can be contemplated from its divine unity, goodness, and purpose.
