His great legacy was not only his humility and moral wisdom, but also to have laid the foundations of the <strong>method of exegesis<\/strong> that would allow the sages of the Sanhedrin to derive laws (<em>halachot<\/em>) from the texts of the Torah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before Hillel, the interpretation of the Law depended upon oral traditions without a formal methodology. Hillel structured such interpretations in <strong>seven logical rules<\/strong>inspired both in the aristotelian logic, as in the tradition midr\u00e1shica. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIf the shabbat, which is more severe, it allows to save lives, how much more the common days!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. <strong>Gezerah Shavah (\u05d2\u05d6\u05e8\u05d4 \u05e9\u05d5\u05d4) \u2014 Analogy for verbal or textual<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Concept<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When two passages contain <strong>a word or expression<\/strong>, it can be inferred that they share the same law or principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Example<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Deuteronomy 24:1 is mentioned the term <em>\u201csefer keritut\u201d<\/em> (the book of divorce). In Leviticus 16:28 the same word is used <em>\u201ckeritut\u201d<\/em> (separation).<br>From this coincidence, the sages infer similarities between the procedures of separation ritual and civil divorce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Application<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is applied with great caution: only the wise who received a <strong>oral tradition legitimate<\/strong> can be used <em>Gezerah Shavah<\/em>, since not all matching text is interpretativamente valid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>VIDEO IN ENGLISH<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"4glExtyhYck\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Rabbinic Exegesis: Learn TODAY to decipher the Bible like the rabbis do\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4glExtyhYck?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. <strong>Binyan Av (\u05d1\u05e0\u05d9\u05df \u05d0\u05d1) \u2014 Construction of a general principle<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Concept<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Is to derive a <strong>general principle<\/strong> from one or more specific cases.<br>There are two types:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Binyan Av mi-Katuv, Cast<\/strong>: based on a single text.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Binyan Av mi-Shnei Ketuvim<\/strong>: based on two texts concordant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Example<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Exodus 21:33-34 teaches that those who shall open a pit, and causes damage is responsible.<br>Here we derive a general principle (<em>Binyan Av<\/em>): <strong>the one who causes the damage with its neglect is responsible<\/strong>, although in other circumstances (fire, animals, etc).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Application<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is used to establish legal foundations from concrete examples, creating coherence between the different laws of the Torah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. <strong>Klal u Prat (\u05db\u05dc\u05dc \u05d5\u05e4\u05e8\u05d8) \u2014 General and particular<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Concept<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If the Torah mentions first one <strong>general rule<\/strong> (<em>klal<\/em>) and then <strong>specifies<\/strong> (<em>prat<\/em>), the law is limited only to what is specified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Example<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Exodus 22:9 says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIf someone delivers to his neighbor, a pet, or ox, or donkey, or any animal to keep...\u201d<br>Here are a <strong>klal<\/strong> (\u201canimal\u201d) followed by a <strong>prat<\/strong> (\u201cox, donkey\u201d).<br>Conclusion: the law refers only to the <strong>pets<\/strong> and not to the entire class of animals.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Application<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Helps to delimit the scope of the laws, avoiding interpretations too broad or out of context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. <strong>Prat'u Klal (\u05e4\u05e8\u05d8 \u05d5\u05db\u05dc\u05dc) \u2014 Particular and general<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Concept<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the reverse of the previous rule. If you are first mentioned specific cases (<em>prat<\/em>), and then a general rule (<em>klal<\/em>), then the generalization extends the scope to <strong>everything that resemble the particular cases<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Example<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Leviticus 19:9:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhen you harvest your field, do not reap to the last corner... nor gather the spikes fall.\u201d<br>Then, in verse 10, it says: \u201cyou will Leave for the poor and the stranger\u201d.<br>Here the <strong>klal<\/strong> end extends the standard <strong>all forms of harvesting agricultural<\/strong>not only ears.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Application<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This rule expands the beginning when the text suggests, showing that the Torah may use examples as an illustration, not limitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. <strong>Kayotze Bo MiMakom Acher (\u05db\u05d9\u05d5\u05e6\u05d0 \u05d1\u05d5 \u05de\u05de\u05e7\u05d5\u05dd \u05d0\u05d7\u05e8) \u2014 Comparison by context parallel<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Concept<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You interpret a passage <strong>in the light of other similar<\/strong> that the subject matter is similar, to clarify meanings, or resolve contradictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Example<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Leviticus 1:10 speaks of the sacrifice of sheep and goats; Numbers 28:4 also.<br>If one is detailed rules that are not in the other, it is assumed that both share the same conditions (<em>kayotze bo<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Application<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Allows <strong>harmonize<\/strong> texts and complete information when the Torah is similar themes in different sections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. <strong>Davar HaLamed MeInyano (\u05d3\u05d1\u05e8 \u05d4\u05dc\u05de\u05d3 \u05de\u05e2\u05e0\u05d9\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5) \u2014 The meaning is learned in the context<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Concept<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The meaning of a word or phrase should be inferred <strong>depending on the context<\/strong> immediate or general where it appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Example<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In Deuteronomy 22:30 it is prohibited for a man to \u201ctake his father's wife\u201d.<br>The context shows that it refers to <strong>a stepmother<\/strong>not the biological mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Application<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This rule is essential to avoid literal interpretations out of context and preserve the coherence of the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>Seven Rules of Hillel<\/em> they represent the first attempt <strong>encode biblical hermeneutics<\/strong> within the rabbinic judaism.
