Its primary basis is the <strong>Book of Esther<\/strong>, instituted to celebrate <strong>the 14th and 15th of adar<\/strong> with the public reading of the meguil\u00e1 (Esther), banquet, sending portions of food and gifts to the poor. The text itself explains the name: <em>pur<\/em> = \u201clot\/batch\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2) historical-literary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The story is set in Persia; the identification of historical Ajashverosh with Xerxes I is proposed classical but not conclusive.
