Denomination, date and location on the calendar<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Hebrew term <strong>\u05e9\u05b0\u05c1\u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9 \u05e2\u05b2\u05e6\u05b6\u05e8\u05b6\u05ea<\/strong> literally translates as the \u201ceighth day of assembly\u201d or \u201ceighth (day) of closure\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Takes place immediately after the festival of Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles). According to the Hebrew calendar, Sukkot begins on the 15th of Tishrei, and Shemini Atzeret is observed on the 22nd of Tishrei in the Land of Israel. In the Diaspora it is observed two days (22nd and 23rd of Tishrei), the second day typically corresponds to Simchat Torah.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Israel, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are celebrated together in a single day. On the outside of Israel (Diaspora), we distinguish two days with separate functions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Although it is directly after Sukkot, many authors insist that Shemini Atzeret is a holiday independent of Sukkot \u2014 not merely its eighth day extended.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Biblical and historical<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Biblical basis<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the biblical text appears in the books of Leviticus and Numbers: for example, in Leviticus 23:36 Numbers 29:35 mentions, \u201cand the eighth day shall be a convention is holy for you.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The term \u201c\u05e2\u05e6\u05e8\u05ea\u201d (\u2018atzeret\u2019) means \u201csolemn meeting\u201d, \u201cdetention\u201d or \u201can\u201d (\u201cto hold back, to gather\u201d).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interpretation rabbinic, historical and liturgical<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>According to rabbinic tradition, Sukkot represents a festivity universal (offers for the 70 nations, etc). In contrast, Shemini Atzeret would be a special moment of communion between God and the people of Israel, \u201cone more day\u201d that God invites us to stay together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was also marked in the Temple of Jerusalem with special offerings: during the 7 days of Sukkot are offered many sacrifices (tradition: 70 bulls for the 70 nations) and on the eighth day only one for Israel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After the destruction of the Temple, the ritual practices have changed: no longer are made the offerings, but the day became a Yom Tov (festival) with their own religious rituals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cOn the eighth day does not belong to the world, but to the heart of the Creator.\u201d<\/strong><br>\u2014 <em>Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kotzk<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Themes and symbolism<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Number eight:<\/strong> The \u201ceighth day\u201d (shemini) is interpreted as outside of the natural cycle (seven days = full cycle), representing something new, transcendent or perpetual.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Atzeret (\u201cincome\u201d):<\/strong> The idea that after the intense days of Sukkot, in which participated the \u201cnations ' \u201d God holds (atzeret), the people of Israel for a day of communion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Seasonal change \/ agricultural:<\/strong> In the Land of Israel marks the beginning of the rainy season. For this reason, we introduce in the liturgy, the prayer for rain (\u05ea\u05e4\u05d9\u05dc\u05ea \u05d2\u05e9\u05dd \u2013 Tefilat Geshem).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Transition to the reading of the Torah:<\/strong> In the Diaspora, the next day (Simchat Torah) culminates in the annual cycle of Torah reading and a new one begins. Shemini Atzeret acts as a closing\/conclusion of the holiday of Sukkot and a prelude to the joy of the Torah.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Main laws, practices and customs<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Status festive<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is a <strong>Yom Tov<\/strong>: holiday with restrictions similar to Shabbat in terms of work (melaj\u00e1) and power of fire, etc, according to the jewish tradition rabbinic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the Diaspora, as many festivities bible, it is celebrated for two days; in Israel, during a day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Liturgical practices key<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the prayer of Musaf (additional service) is incorporated in the prayer of \u201c\u05d4\u05e9\u05d9\u05d1 \u05d4\u05e8\u05d5\u05d7 \u05d5\u05de\u05e8\u05d9\u05d3 \u05d4\u05d2\u05e9\u05dd\u201d (\u201che who makes the wind blow and sendeth rain\u201d), marking the beginning of asking for rain in Israel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reciting the service of Yizkor (prayers memorial for the deceased) in many congregations in Shemini Atzeret.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the reading of the Torah: a special reading to the end of Deuteronomy, and then, on Simchat Torah, the beginning of Genesis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practices related to Sukkot<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Although Shemini Atzeret immediately follows Sukkot, many of the mitzvot specific Sukkot <strong>no<\/strong> apply: for example, do not recite the blessing when they enter in the sukk\u00e1, not waving the four species (lulav and etrog) and Sukkot.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the Diaspora, some people still eat in the sukk\u00e1 in Shemini Atzeret (without reciting the blessing), as a reminiscence of the link with Sukkot.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Customs of joy<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In many communities (especially in Simchat Torah) are made hakafot: processions or convolutions with the Torah scrolls, songs, dances, community celebration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On Shemini Atzeret combines the solemnity with joy: celebrate the special meeting with God, we give thanks for the harvest ended, but also anticipates the feast of the Torah.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cShemini Atzeret is the farewell of the holidays, when the soul does not want to return to the ordinary world.\u201d<\/strong><br>\u2014 <em>Rabbi Eliyahu Kitov, \u201cThe Book of Holidays\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Geographical differences and tradition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Land of Israel<\/strong>: a day of festivity; Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah are combined.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Diaspora (outside Israel)<\/strong>: two days. First day: Shemini Atzeret; second day: Simchat Torah, with distinct liturgical practices and community.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The customs may vary between currents of orthodox, conservative and reform: some communities reformers also combine in a single day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6.
