Biblical foundation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sukkot is sorted in several passages of the Torah:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Leviticus 23:33-43:<\/strong> \u201cYe shall dwell in booths seven days; all that are native in Israel shall dwell in booths, so that you know your generations, that in the cabins did I dwell, the children of Israel when you brought them out of the land of Egypt.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exodus 23:16:<\/strong> \u201cAnd the feast of the harvest at the end of the year, when thou hast gathered in from the fields and the fruit of your work.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Deuteronomy 16:13-15:<\/strong> \u201cShall observe the feast of tabernacles for seven days... and rejoice in your feast.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These texts are the foundation of the three dimensions of Sukkot: <strong>historical remembrance of the Exodus)<\/strong>, <strong>agricultural (collection)<\/strong> and <strong>spiritual joy and dependence on God)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cSukkot teaches us that joy is not dependent on the ceiling that we have, but the light that is let in by its branches.\u201d<\/strong><br>\u2014 <em>Rabbi Jonathan Sacks<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>III. Dimensions and meanings of Sukkot<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Historical dimension<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sukkot reminds of the time that the israelites <strong>they lived in cabins<\/strong> in the desert, and depend totally on God. The cottages represent the human fragility and the <strong>divine protection<\/strong> symbolized in the \u201cclouds of glory\u201d that covered the people during their journey (according to the Midrash).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Dimension agricultural<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sukkot marks the end of the agricultural cycle of the year in Israel. It is the time of the <strong>collection of the fruits<\/strong> (grapes, olives, dates, pomegranates, etc). Spiritual dimension<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sukkot is considered to be the <strong>party joy<\/strong> (<em>Zeman Simjatenu<\/em>, \u201ctime of our joy\u201d), as it says in Deuteronomy 16:14:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAnd you rejoice in your festival\u201d.<br>It is a time to recognize the impermanence of life and fully trust in divine providence.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>IV. Commandments (Mitzvot) of Succoth<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. To dwell in the Sukkah<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>During the seven days of Sukkot, jews built and live in a <strong>sukkah<\/strong>, a hut or temporary, made of natural materials, especially branches or reeds for the roof (<em>sajaj<\/em>).<br>The mitzvah is in <strong>eat, sleep, and spend time in the sukkah<\/strong>, reminding us of the fragility of existence and the divine protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>sukkah<\/em> you must have at least <strong>three walls<\/strong> and a roof that let a little light and let you see the stars.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <em>sajaj<\/em> (ceiling) should not be of industrial material, but natural, and disconnected from the ground (branches, palm leaves, reeds, etc).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <em>sukkah<\/em> symbolizes both the <strong>clouds of glory<\/strong> who protected Israel as the <strong>humility before God<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. The Lulav and the Four Species<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The second commandment central is <strong>take the \u201cfour species\u201d<\/strong> (<em>Arbaat HaMinim<\/em>), described in Leviticus 23:40:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cYe shall take you on the first day the fruit of beautiful tree, branches of palm trees, boughs of leafy trees, and willows of the brook; and you; and you shall rejoice before Adonai your God for seven days.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>These are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Etrog (\u05e4\u05e8\u05d9 \u05e2\u05e5 \u05d4\u05d3\u05e8)<\/strong> \u2013 the fruit of the citron.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lulav (\u05db\u05e4\u05d5\u05ea \u05ea\u05de\u05e8\u05d9\u05dd)<\/strong> \u2013 a branch of a date palm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fairy (\u05e2\u05e0\u05e3 \u05e2\u05e5 \u05e2\u05d1\u05d5\u05ea)<\/strong> \u2013 three branches of myrtle.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Arav\u00e1 (\u05e2\u05e8\u05d1\u05d9 \u05e0\u05d7\u05dc)<\/strong> \u2013 two branches of willow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The four species are shaken together every day (except on Shabbat) in six directions \u2014north, south, east, west, up and down\u2014 symbolizing that <strong>God is everywhere<\/strong> and the whole of nature depends on It.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>V. Duration and structure of the festival<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Duration<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In <strong>Israel:<\/strong> 7 days (from 15 to 21 Tishrei).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the <strong>diaspora:<\/strong> 8 days (by the doubling of traditional holidays, outside of Israel).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Days<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>First day:<\/strong> Yom Tov, holy day with work ban.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>In-between days:<\/strong> <em>Chol HaMoed<\/em> (days semifestivos).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Last day:<\/strong> <em>Hoshana Rabbah<\/em> (seventh-day), the day of final judgment symbolic of the cycle of the feasts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Immediately after:<\/strong> <em>Shemin\u00ed Atzeret<\/em> (eighth day), and <em>Simchat Torah<\/em> (ninth in the diaspora), which closed the cycle festive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cDuring Sukkot, the jewish lives with the walls of the faith and the roof of the sky.\u201d<\/strong><br>\u2014 <em>Talmud, Suk\u00e1 2a<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>VI. Traditional customs and practices<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Decorating the Sukkah:<\/strong> It is decorated with fruits, drawings, lights and symbols agricultural, celebrating the abundance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ushpizin:<\/strong> Mystical tradition (the Z\u00f3har) that teaches that every night \u201cvisit\u201d the sukkah one of the seven spiritual shepherds of Israel: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Aaron, Joseph and David.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Liturgical readings:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the synagogue, read texts of the <em>Kohelet<\/em> (Ecclesiastes), which reflects on the transience of life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recite special prayers <em>Hallel<\/em> (praise) and <em>Hoshanot<\/em> (supplications, with the lulav).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Joy:<\/strong> Celebrations known as <em>Simchat Beit Hashoevah<\/em> (\u201cthe joy of the extraction of water\u201d), recalling the water ceremony in the Temple.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>VII. Sukkot at the time of the Temple<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <strong>Second Temple of Jerusalem<\/strong>, Sukkot was the party most massive of the year.<br>Thousands of pilgrims were coming with offerings, and the ceremony took place in the <strong>\u201cNisuj HaMayim\u201d<\/strong> (libation of water): the High Priest poured water on the altar, asking for blessing the rains of the coming year.<br>According to the Mishnah (Suk\u00e1 5:1), the joy was so great that it was said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhoever has not seen the joy of Beit Hashoevah, not seen joy in his life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>VIII. Meaning symbolic and prophetic<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sukkot has a deep <strong>eschatological meaning<\/strong> in the jewish tradition and biblical:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Zechariah 14:16-19<\/strong> prophesies that in the future, all the nations of the world will go up to Jerusalem to celebrate Sukkot, symbolizing the <strong>universal oneness under God<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Represents the <strong>final reconciliation between God and humanity<\/strong>after the judgment of Yom Kippur.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the mystical tradition, and Succoth, symbolizes the <strong>time messianic<\/strong>when the divine presence (<em>Shechinah<\/em>) to dwell among men.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>IX. Spiritual message for contemporary<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sukkot teaches several essential lessons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Humility and dependence:<\/strong> The sukkah reminds us that material security is fleeting, the real protection comes from God.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gratitude:<\/strong> Thanks for the fruits of the earth and the blessings of the year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unit:<\/strong> The four species represent different types of people, but united in a single service to God.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Joy:<\/strong> Joy as a command, not as a consequence but as an expression of faith.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>X. Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sukkot is a holiday more rich and multifaceted of judaism.<br>Combining history, nature, liturgy, mysticism and universal hope.
