Commemorates the liberation of Israel from slavery in Egypt and the \u201cstep\u201d (pesach) of the plague on the houses marked with the blood of the lamb (Ex 12). It is celebrated from the 15th of Nisan (march\/April) by <strong>7 days in Israel<\/strong> and <strong>8 in the Diaspora<\/strong> (see why below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2) biblical Sources essential<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Korban Passover (offering pascual) and matzah<\/strong>: Ex 12; regulatory annual: Ex 13; Lev 23:5-8; Num 9:1-14; Deut 16:1-8. (Primary text in Hebrew\/English available in Sefaria; legal structure and narrative of the rite).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Passover Shen\u00ed (Second Passover)<\/strong>: those who were unable to bring the offering on the 14th of Nisan, they could do it <strong>a month later, on the 14th of Iyar<\/strong> (Num 9). Today he is remembered eating matzah, without korban.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cPassover is not an event of the past, but the ongoing opportunity of redemption in the present.\u201d<\/strong><br>\u2014 <em>Rabbi Jonathan Sacks<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3) Schedule and duration (7 or 8 days)<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>biblical mandate<\/strong> it is seven days of Jag HaMatzot; the practice of <strong>eight days in the Diaspora<\/strong> it is a decree rabbinical historical by the ancient uncertainty of the lunar calendar (yom tov shen\u00ed shel galuiot). In Israel and in great part of the reform judaism: 7 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4) Preparation and prohibitions (jametz)<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Jametz<\/strong>: it is prohibited to possess and consume it during the party (five grains: wheat, spelt, barley, oats and rye). Done <strong>bedik\u00e1<\/strong> (search) <strong>biur<\/strong> (destruction) before noon of the 14th of Nisan; it is also used <strong>mejir\u00e1t jametz<\/strong> (legal sale to a non-jew).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kitniyot<\/strong>: legumes and grains not leudantes (rice, beans, etc)\u2014banned custom of ashkenazi; usually allowed to sephardic. (Base halachic and distinction in respect of the \u201cfive grains\u201d).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5) The night of the Seder: the structure and meaning<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Seder<\/strong> it is the ritual meal of the 15th of Nisan (and also the of the 16 in the Diaspora), guided by the <strong>Haggadah<\/strong>ordered to recount the exodus from Egypt, to drink <strong>four cups<\/strong>, eating <strong>matzo<\/strong> and <strong>the maror<\/strong>, and conclude with <strong>Hallel<\/strong>. The <strong>Mishnah Pesajim cap 10<\/strong> fixed the dramaturgy basic (questions of the child, \u201cAram\u00ed oved avi\u201d, rest as free men, etc). The <strong>15 steps<\/strong> classic: <em>Kadesh, Urjatz, Karpas, Yajatz, Maguid, Rajtz\u00e1, Motz\u00ed, Matzah, The Maror, Korej, Shulchan Orej, Tzaf\u00fan, Beiraj, Hallel, Nirtz\u00e1<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cThe story of the exodus from Egypt is not history: it is identity.\u201d<\/strong><br>\u2014 <em>Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Symbolic elements main<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Matzo<\/strong> (unleavened bread): rush of the output and the \u201cbread of affliction\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The maror<\/strong> (bitter herbs): the bitterness of slavery. (Treaty Pesajim and Haggadah).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Four cups<\/strong>: mark sections of the story, and blessing (Kiddush; after Maguid; after Birkat Hammaz\u00f3n; after Hallel).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Afikom\u00e1n<\/strong>: the portion of matzah \u201chidden\u201d which is eaten at the end, in memory of the korban pesach. (Tradition mishnaica\/talmudic).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6) historical Evolution<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Biblical era and First\/Second Temple<\/strong>: Passover as a pilgrimage to Jerusalem with <strong>sacrifice of the lamb<\/strong> (14 Nisan, eaten in the evening with matzah and the maror). Josephus bears witness to crowds and tensions in the Passover; following the destruction of 70 CE stop the sacrifices and the ritual migrates to the home and the synagogue, focused on the Haggadah.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Outside of the jewish world<\/strong>: the <strong>samaritans<\/strong> preserved until today is a passover sacrifice to the community in the mount Guerizim, following Ex 12. Documented in news reports, and ethnographic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Haggadah in the history of art<\/strong>: the <strong>Haggadah de Sarajevo<\/strong> (s. XIV, hispanic origin) is the illuminated manuscript the most famous; it was inscribed by UNESCO in <strong>Memory of the World<\/strong> (2017).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cWho forgets the taste of bitterness can not appreciate the value of freedom.\u201d<\/strong><br>\u2014 <em>Talmud Bavli, Pesajim 116b<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7) Halacha and contemporary practice<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Before the party<\/strong>: bedik\u00e1 the night of 13\/14 of Nisan; biur before <strong>noon halachic<\/strong> 14; kasherizar utensils or separate them; sale of jametz remnant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>During the party<\/strong>: not possess or consume jametz; eat matzah (ideally <em>shmur\u00e1<\/em> in the Seder); four bowls; complete story of the exodus from Egypt; songs and hallel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Holy days and <em>chol hamoed<\/em><\/strong>: 1st and 7th (in Diaspora also 2 and 8) are <em>yom tov<\/em>; intermediates allow for limited work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Variants of habit<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Kitniyot<\/em>: Ashkenazi usually refrain; Sephardic usually allowed with controls.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Second Seder in the Diaspora<\/strong>: continuity of the old problem of messaging\/lunar calendar. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Passover Shen\u00ed (14 Iyar)<\/strong>: reminder with matzo; without jametz non-level festive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8) Theology and message<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Passover focuses on <strong>freedom, memory active and ethical responsibility<\/strong>: \u201cin every generation, one must see himself as if he had come out of Egypt\u201d (Mishnah Pesajim 10), connecting the redemption of historical and moral conduct this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9) the Passover and christianity (historical data)<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>There is a <strong>academic debate<\/strong> on if the <strong>Last Supper<\/strong> was or was not a Seder of Passover: the <strong>Synoptic<\/strong> it is presented as easter; <strong>John<\/strong> standing before the pascal meal.
