He was born in the late Antiquity to <strong>to resolve apparent contradictions in the bible, substantiate laws, and to extract new meanings<\/strong> of the text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2) Two large families: halacha and agad\u00e1<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The scholars distinguish between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Midrash halachah<\/strong>: exegesis, legal (regulatory), focused on lead or support <strong>laws<\/strong> from the Torah (e.g., <em>Sifr\u00e1<\/em>, <em>Sifr\u00e9<\/em>, <em>Mekhilta<\/em>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Midrash agad\u00e1<\/strong>: exegesis <strong>narrative\/theological<\/strong> (ethics, satellite dish, homiletic), which fills the silences of the story, shaping characters and extracts lessons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3) The corpus classic (map fast)<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.1. Midrash\u00edm hal\u00e1jicos (tanna\u00edtas, s. II\u2013III)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mekhilta of R. Ishmael<\/strong> (Exodus).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sifr\u00e1<\/strong> (Leviticus).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sifr\u00e9<\/strong> (Numbers and Deuteronomy).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.2. Midrash\u00edm agadicos (amora\u00edtas and later, s. IV\u2013VII)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bereshit\/Genesis Rabbah<\/strong> (on Genesis), exhibition verse to verse. Dated approx. s. V.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vayikr\u00e1\/Leviticus Rabbah<\/strong> (homiletic, famous for its pr\u00f3emios). Dated in the Land of Israel, s. V\u2013VI.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Eij\u00e1\/Lamentations Rabbah<\/strong> (very narrative). Among the oldest<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pesiqta de-Rav Kahana<\/strong> (homilies for parties and shabatot special; s. V\u2013VI).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other \u201cRabbot\u201d on <strong>Ruth, Song Of Solomon, Ecclesiastes, Esther, Deuteronomy<\/strong>, etc (with strata of a different date).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.3. Collections and anthologies medieval (s. XI\u2013XIV+)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Yalkut Shimoni<\/strong> (compilation agg\u00e1dica that covers all of the Bible; s. XIII).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other collections (e.g., <em>Yalkut Reubeni<\/em>, s. XVII).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cIn the Midrash, the imagination is a form of theology.\u201d<\/strong><br>\u2014<em>Jacob Neusner<\/em> (scholar of rabbinic judaism)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4) hermeneutical Methods (middot)<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The midrash operates with \u201crules\u201d (middot) of reading. The two schools canonical are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hilel<\/strong> (7 rules, antecedent).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>R. Ishmael<\/strong> at the beginning of <em>Sifr\u00e1<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>the 13 rules provide guidance on <strong>how to<\/strong> linking verses, terms and structures to derive a rule or direction.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5) literary Forms typical<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Petiht\u00e1 \/ pr\u00f3emio<\/strong>: a homily opens with a \u201cverse-far\u201d (often Psalms\/Proverbs), establishes bridges rhetorical and returns to the \u201cverse close\u201d is preached. Distinctive feature of <em>Leviticus Rabbah<\/em>, <em>Genesis Rabbah<\/em> and the <em>Pesiqtot<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Derash\u00e1<\/strong> homiletics: development central with quotations, parables (<em>mashal<\/em>), maximum and applications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Structure by cycles of the liturgical<\/strong>: several midrash\u00edm are sorted based on readings holiday or a week (e.g., <em>Pesiqta de-Rav Kahana<\/em>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6) historical Context and linguistic<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>The midrash\u00edm <strong>arise and are fixed<\/strong> between the ages II and VII in <strong>Land of Israel<\/strong> (and, later, in circles babylonian and european), in <strong>Hebrew rabbinical<\/strong> and <strong>aramaic<\/strong>, with loans of Greek and Latin. Met functions <strong>sinagogales and pedagogical<\/strong>by integrating with misn\u00e1, Talmud and piyyut (liturgical poetry).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7) representative Works<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Genesis Rabbah (Bereishit Rabbah)<\/strong>: comment an exhibition Genesis; comp. s. V\u2013VI.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lamentations Rabbah<\/strong>: emphasis narrative, proemios extensive, and among the most ancient.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pesiqta de-Rav Kahana<\/strong>: homilies for festivities and shabatot special; very early (V\u2013VI); classic translation JPS (Braude).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mekhilta\u2013Sifr\u00e1\u2013Sifr\u00e9<\/strong>: triad legal on Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers\/Deuteronomy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Yalkut Shimoni<\/strong>: great anthology of medieval \u201ccollects\u201d passages of midrash\u00edm above, covering the entire Bible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cEach Midrash is a conversation between the Torah and the soul of those who read it.\u201d<\/strong><br>\u2014<em>Abraham Joshua Heschel<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8) Method vs. genre: how-to \u201cmakes sense\u201d in the midrash<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>More than \u201ctelling stories\u201d, the midrash <strong>read microscopically<\/strong> words, letters and silences of the text, for <strong>re-mean<\/strong> and <strong>update<\/strong>. As a method, <strong>it does not replace<\/strong> the plain sense (<em>peshat<\/em>), but <strong>expand<\/strong> (<em>derash<\/em>), within the classical framework of <strong>PaRDeS<\/strong> (peshat-remez-derash-sod).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9) Receipt of medieval and modern<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Medieval<\/strong>: the <em>Rabbot<\/em> circulate; commentators like <strong>Rashi<\/strong> integrated agad\u00e1 midr\u00e1shica in his exegesis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Science of Judaism (s. XIX)<\/strong>: <strong>Leopold Zunz<\/strong> inaugurates the study of historical-critical of the midrash (<em>Gottesdienstliche Vortr\u00e4ge der Juden.<\/em>, 1832). (impacts the tone, purpose, and technical).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pinpoint the way<\/strong>: is there <em>petiht\u00e1<\/em>? what are parables? what chain of verses? (key <em>Rabbot<\/em> and <em>Pesiqtot<\/em>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rastre\u00e1 sources<\/strong>: what verse \u201cfar away\u201d opens? how to return to the \u201cclose\u201d? (cartografi\u00e1 bridges rhetorical).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Read with the liturgical cycle<\/strong>: many parts are best understood in their <strong>use sinagogal<\/strong> (parties, haftarot).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Don't confuse history with theology<\/strong>: in agad\u00e1, the goal is moral-theological, non-chronic factual.
