Time and environment<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Meir Baal HaN\u00e9s (\u201cthe one who makes miracles\u201d) was one of the greatest scholars tana\u00edtas century II e.c., belonging to the second generation after the destruction of the Second Temple of Jerusalem (70 e.c.). He lived during the era of the Roman Empire, in times of religious persecution, especially under Hadrian, when the teaching of the Torah was forbidden. His life passed between the land of Israel and Babylon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Meir was a direct disciple of <strong>Rabbi Akiva<\/strong>, whom he venerated deeply and whose method of interpretation adopted. After the martyrdom of his teacher, Meir became one of the main transmitters of his school of thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>II. Identity and lineage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Name and origin<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The name \u201cMeir\u201d (Hebrew, \u201che who enlightens\u201d) symbolizes your ability to bring clarity to the Torah. According to the <em>Talmud<\/em> (Eruv\u00edn 13b), that was not its original name: it was called so because he \u201cenlightened the eyes of the wise with its wisdom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was a descendant of converts to judaism. A tradition (Yerushalmi, Sanhedrin 4:6) says that he came from the family of <strong>Nero Caesar<\/strong>, who, after fleeing from Rome, and converted to judaism, and begat descendants, among whom was Rabbi Meir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His wife was the famous <strong>Beruria<\/strong>the daughter of Rabbi Jananiah ben Teradi\u00f3n, also a roman martyr. Beruria is one of the few women cited in the Talmud by his erudition and wit, and his relationship with Meir, symbolising a couple of wisdom and virtue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cEverything that makes the Creator, what makes for good, even if the man does not understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>III. Training and teachers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Meir studied first with <strong>Rabbi Yishmael<\/strong>, from whom he learned the rules of hermeneutics to interpret the Torah. He later joined <strong>Rabbi Akiva<\/strong>whose method deepest of exegesis and spiritual approach marked him forever. He was also a contemporary and friend of other great tana\u00edtas as Rabbi Yehuda, Rabbi Yose, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and Rabbi Nehemia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the execution of Akiva, Meir continued to teach in different places \u2014mainly in Usha in the Galilee, where they reconstituted the Sanhedrin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>IV. His role in the Sanhedrin and his legacy halachic<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Meir was recognized as one of the major legislators of the Sanhedrin at Usha. About the goodness and forgiveness<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Talmud tells us that Rabbi Meir prayed for sinners to repent, not to be punished (<em>Berachot 10a<\/em>). When a wicked harassed him, his wife, Beruria taught him to pray \u201cto cease from sin\u201d and not \u201csinners\u201d. There arises one of the most beautiful teachings of mercy in the rabbinic tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Faith and miracles<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Meir is called \u201cBaal HaN\u00e9s\u201d by the <strong>miracles associated with his name<\/strong>. According to tradition, in times of persecution, managed to escape from Rome, thanks to the divine help after freeing his sister-in-law in prison. Since then attributed to him wonders and the famous prayer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe g-d of Rabbi Meir answer me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Until today, jews from around the world to invoke this phrase in times of danger or need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>VI. Interpretative style and method of exegesis<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Meir unified the methods of their teachers, Ishmael and Akiva, combining the literal interpretation and logic with symbolic and mystical. His approach is distinguished by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Precision language:<\/strong> I analyzed every word and particle in the text.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Symbolism moral:<\/strong> I looked at each law as a teaching ethics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trend to equilibrium:<\/strong> he avoided the extremism hal\u00e1jicos, although he defended the justice strict.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>His motto practical was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cLearn from every man, even of the ignorant, for there is no man without his hour, nor thing without his place.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>VII. His relationship with the romans, and the exile<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Meir suffered persecution by the roman authorities. After the execution of his father-in-law, he was falsely accused and had to flee to Asia Minor (probably Asia Minor or Babylon). Teachings famous<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cWhoever studies the Torah for the love of it, gains merit innumerable.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cThat pokes fun of the wise lose his portion in the World to Come.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cHe loves the work, hates authority, and don't get too close to power.\u201d (<em>Pirkei Avot 4:13<\/em>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cThe one who teaches Torah to his neighbor is as if you had created it.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cEverything that makes the Creator, what makes for good, even if the man does not understand.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>X. Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Meir Baal HaN\u00e9s represents the <strong>archetype of the wise enlightened<\/strong>: rational, ethical, and mystical at the same time. It was a bridge between the destruction and the spiritual reconstruction of the jewish people.
