Identity and historical context<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Time:<\/strong> First\u2013second century CE. He lived in the times of the <strong>Second Temple<\/strong> and he survived their destruction (ad 70), coming up to the time of Rabban Gamliel II, and Rabbi Akiva, that is to say, until approximately decades 120-130 CE.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Role:<\/strong> Tana\u00edta palestinian, of the <strong>first sages of the Mishnah<\/strong>, counted among the \u201cmajor tana\u00edm\u201d of the second generation, with figures such as Rabban Gamliel II, Rabbi Yehoshua ben Janania and Rabbi Elazar ben Azaria.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Place:<\/strong> Active mainly in <strong>Eretz Israel<\/strong>activity documented in Jerusalem, and then in the area of the Galilee (Usha, Shefar'am), according to the Tosefta.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Position in the tradition:<\/strong> Cited <strong>11 times in the Mishnah<\/strong> and with greater frequency in baraitot. In many sources it appears simply as \u201cRabbi Dosa\u201d, and the parallel passages allow it to be identified as <strong>Dosa ben Harkinas<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important not to confuse it with <strong>Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa<\/strong>another tana\u00edta famous for piety and miracles, nor with <strong>Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrkanos<\/strong> (Hyrcanus), which shares a patronymic similar but is a different character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>\u201cIf we put in doubt the authority of the court of Rabban Gamliel, we must put in doubt that of all the courts, from the days of Moshe until today.\u201d<\/strong><br>(Rosh Hashanah 25a)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Work and contributions hal\u00e1jicos<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.1. Received tradition of Haggai the prophet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Talmud Bavl\u00ed relates that Rebbi Dosa ben Harkinas preserve a <strong>oral tradition attributed to the prophet Haggai<\/strong> with three concrete lessons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Levirate and co-wife's daughter:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Case: A man whose brother married his <strong>daughter<\/strong> (as one of multiple wives).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Education: you are Not allowed to make yib\u00fam (levirate) with any of the co-wives after the death of the brother.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This teaching coincides with the position of <strong>Beth Hillel<\/strong> and is opposed to Beth Shammai.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tithe of the poor (ma asher an\u00ed) in Ammon and Moab, in the sabbatical year:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jews living in the regions of <strong>Ammon and Moab<\/strong> should be separated in the year of shemit\u00e1 the tithe for the poor, in place of the ma asher shen\u00ed that is eaten in Jerusalem.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This guaranteed resources to the poor even when the land of Israel itself was at rest, and shows an application <strong>pragmatic<\/strong> of the Torah to the border areas or semidiasp\u00f3ricas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Acceptance of converts from Tadmor and Kardu:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They had to accept proselytes from <strong>Tadmor (Palmyra)<\/strong> and <strong>Kardu (Corduene)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This indicates a <strong>regulated opening towards the converts<\/strong> from distant villages, and is related to the debate about the legitimacy of certain populations in the halachah.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>These three halachot are a clear example of Rabbi Dosa as <strong>transmitter of age-old traditions<\/strong>linked by the rabbinic tradition to the time of the prophets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe discipline of the spirit begins with the discipline of the hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.2. The episode of Yevamot 16a: the confusion with his brother<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the time of Rabbi Akiva, and Rabbi Elazar ben Azaria, reached the ears of the wise men <strong>Rabbi Dosa ben Harkinas had allowed<\/strong> just the case of levirate that Haggai would have prohibited (the man that makes yib\u00fam with the co-wife of her own daughter), according to Beth Shammai. Controversy on the calendar: Rosh Hashanah 2-3<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>Rosh Hashanah 2:8-9<\/strong> it is narrated that two witnesses said they had seen the <strong>new moon<\/strong> in circumstances astronomically difficult, and Rabban Gamliel accepted his testimony, thus securing the calendar. Rabbi Dosa, in contrast, considered <strong>\u201cfalse witnesses\u201d<\/strong>using a metaphor, vivid picture: \u201cHow can attest that a woman gave birth if the next day your belly is still bulging?\u201d. Rabbi Yehoshua admits that he convinces the logic of Dosa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabban Gamliel reacts by ordering Yehoshua that <strong>is this before him on the day that, according to the own calculation of Yehoshua, it would be Yom Kippur<\/strong> with his stick and bag of money (i.e., profane, according to their own calendar, a holy day). Dosa is involved at this point to say a key phrase in the theory rabbinic authority:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIf we put in doubt the decisions of the Beth Din of Rabban Gamliel, we have to put into question all of the decisions of every Beth Din from the days of Moshe until today.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>With this Dosa:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Recognizes the binding force<\/strong> of the institution of the Nas\u00ed and his court, even if in a particular case seem to be the wrong witnesses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advises Yehoshua <strong>to cede for the good of the unit halachic<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It becomes a classic source for the idea that <strong>the institutional continuity weighs more than the correction point<\/strong> in the calculation of the calendar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.4. Providence and synthesis between Torah and prosperity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The scene where Dosa looks to Rabbi Elazar ben Azaria \u2013a young, wise and very rich\u2013 and quote the verse, \u201cI have not seen the righteous forsaken\u201d shows another facet:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For Dosa, the <strong>Torah and the material prosperity are not necessarily antagonists<\/strong>, provided that the wealth is at the service of the spiritual mission and community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Thinking messianic: the Messiah ben Yosef<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Dosa ben Harkinas is associated with one of the oldest texts on the enigmatic <strong>Messiah ben Yosef<\/strong>. In <strong>Sukkah 52a<\/strong> appears a discussion on the verse from Zechariah 12:10: \u201cthey shall Look on him whom they have pierced, and shall mourn for him\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some scholars interpret as grief for the <strong>death of the evil inclination<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rabbi Dosa<\/strong> interpreted as mourning for the death of the <strong>Messiah ben Yosef<\/strong>, a messianic figure who dies in battle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The editor-in-talmudic <strong>leans towards the interpretation of Dosa<\/strong>, and from this passage develops the whole subsequent tradition of a Messiah, son of Joseph, which precedes the Messiah, son of David and dies before the final redemption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the study of the history of ideas, this makes for Dosa:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One of the <strong>the first witnesses explicit<\/strong> a concept of dual messianism (ben Yosef \/ ben David).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An exegete who reads the prophecy of Zechariah in key <strong>historical-messianic concrete<\/strong>not merely allegorical.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7.
