What is the \u201cGospel of Perfection\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Original name likely in Greek: <strong>\u03b5\u1f50\u03b1\u03b3\u03b3\u03ad\u03bb\u03b9\u03bf\u03bd \u03c4\u03b5\u03bb\u03b5\u03b9\u03ce\u03c3\u03b5\u03c9\u03c2 (euang\u00e9lion tele\u00ed\u014dse\u014ds)<\/strong>, which in Latin is cited as <strong>Evangelium perfectionis<\/strong>, i.e., <em>\u201cThe gospel of Perfection\u201d<\/em> or <em>\u201cGospel of the Consummation\u201d<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Part of the <strong>apocryphal literature of the New Testament<\/strong>in the group of <strong>\u201cgospels under general titles\u201d<\/strong> (not attributed to an apostle concrete: gospel of truth, of the four regions, celestial, etc).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>unanimous opinion of the scholars<\/strong> (Otero, Hennecke-Schneemelcher, dictionaries bible) is that it is a <strong>source text gnostic<\/strong>probably used by <strong>gnostic sects such as the borboritas or ophites<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Conclusion of departure:<br><strong>We know that he existed, that he was a gnostic and condemned as a heretic, but we don't know what I was saying.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. IV)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The main source is <strong>Epiphanius<\/strong>, bishop of Salamis (c. 315-403), in his great work antiher\u00e9tica <strong>Panarion<\/strong> (\u201ckit of remedies against heresies\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <strong>Panarion 26<\/strong>, against the so-called <strong>Gnostic\/Borboritas<\/strong>, Epiphanius, lists a series of books which, according to him, he used that sect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Book of Noria<\/strong> (wife of Noah),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gospel of Perfection<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gospel of Eve<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Questions (or Issues) of Mary<\/strong> (major and minor version),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Seth books<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The apocalypse of Adam<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Birth of Mary<\/strong>, etc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In one of the translations of the <strong>Panarion 26,2,5<\/strong>, Epiphanius says about this book:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key points:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Considered <strong>a written dummy<\/strong> and <strong>obscene<\/strong>, associated to sex rites heretical.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No <strong>appointment to any fragment<\/strong> the Gospel of Perfection; just name it and we ridiculed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cOnly those who know its origin recognizes its target.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.2. Filastrio of Brescia (s. IV)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another heresi\u00f3logo, <strong>Filastrio of Brescia<\/strong> (\u2020 c. 397), in his work <strong>Liber de haeresibus<\/strong>, also mentions the <strong>Gospel of Perfection<\/strong>but his testimony <strong>depends on Epiphanius<\/strong>: basically repeats that it is a book, heretic and whimsical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.3. Lists of ancient apocryphal books<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In subsequent lists of <strong>\u201capocryphal gospels lost\u201d<\/strong> (for example, builds, medieval or catalogs modern to collect old testimonies) the <strong>Gospel of Perfection<\/strong> is recorded only by <strong>the title and the reference to Epiphanius\/Filastrio<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. What we know (and what not) of your content<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.1. Opinion of modern scholars<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Classic works such as <strong>\u201cThe apocryphal gospels\u201d<\/strong> Aurelio de Santos Otero, and other manual summary of the situation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe gospel of Perfection. Source gnostic. We know his existence by the testimony of Epiphanius, and Filastrio, without this we can conclude something specific about its content.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In summary:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Does not retain any manuscript<\/strong> the Gospel of Perfection.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>We do not have direct quotes explicit<\/strong> (just a mention hostile to the title).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any detailed reconstruction of his doctrine is <strong>speculative<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.2. Possible relationship with the \u201cGospel of Eve\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is an important assumption: <strong>the Gospel of Perfection, and the Gospel of Eve would be the same text<\/strong>or two titles for the same work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Gospel of Eve<\/strong> it is also a gnostic gospel almost completely lost, known by a few quotes from Epiphanius (Panarion 26) where it attaches to the <strong>borboritas<\/strong> and <strong>practice of \u201cfree love\u201d and sexual symbolism<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some scholars think that the <strong>Gospel of Perfection<\/strong> it would be simply a variant of the same text, given the closeness of the titles and the same sectarian group.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But there is no final consensus: other distinguished both gospels, pointing out that Epiphanius mentions the two separate titles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.3. The term \u201cperfection\u201d in the context of gnostic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <strong>terminology religious old<\/strong>, especially in <strong>mysteries and gnosticism<\/strong>, the term <strong>\u201cperfect\u201d (teleios)<\/strong> designated the <strong>\u201cstarted full\u201d<\/strong>someone who has reached the <strong>full gnosis or enlightenment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Various currents gnostic, salvation is not given by the simple faith, but by <strong>an in-depth knowledge, esoteric<\/strong>reserved for \u201cperfect\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Probably the gospel bore that title because it had a <strong>revelation destined to the perfect<\/strong>, or describing the <strong>\u201cconsummation\u201d (tele\u00ed\u014dsis) of salvation<\/strong> in key gnostic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is consistent with the fact that the <strong>Borboritas\/Ophitas<\/strong> used other texts, laden with esoteric symbolism (Seth Books, the Apocalypse of Adam, etc).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cDo not be afraid of the dark: is the veil that guards the revelation of the perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Historical and theological context<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.1. Time and place likely<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although we can't set an exact date, by the context of the controversies:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The text should circulate at least from the <strong>century III<\/strong> and be active still in the <strong>century IV<\/strong>when Epiphanius, and Filastrio written.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Associated with <strong>gnostic circles of the East<\/strong> (Syria, Palestine, Egypt), similar to the <strong>Ophitas\/Borboritas<\/strong>, who developed myths themselves about Adam, Eve, the serpent, Seth, etc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.2. Current doctrinal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Tracks (sect user, accusations of sexual rituals, name text) suggest:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Christology gnostic<\/strong>: Christ <strong>divine emanation<\/strong> that brings knowledge savior, rather than as a historical Messiah incarnated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Anthropology dualistic<\/strong>: strong contrast between <strong>spirit\/light<\/strong> and <strong>matter\/dark<\/strong>typical gnostic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Perfection as gnosis<\/strong>: the \u201cperfection\u201d would not be moral in classic biblical sense, but <strong>full integration into the light<\/strong>with access to mysteries reserved for the few.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But I insist: this is <strong>reconstruction of context<\/strong>not textual content of the gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe soul perfect it ascends by force, but by memory.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Reception patristic: why it considered heretical<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the fathers of the Church, this gospel appears always in <strong>listings of books condemned<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Epiphanius calls <strong>\u201cwork fictitious pornography\u201d<\/strong> and it includes, among <strong>books forged by heretics<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Catalogues post quoted along with other <strong>gospels of the gnostics and manichaeans<\/strong> as the <strong>Gospel of Mani (Gospel Live)<\/strong>, the <strong>Gospel of Eve<\/strong>, the <strong>Gospel of Truth<\/strong>, etc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Here there are two levels that have to be distinguished:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The doctrinal level<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They rejected the entire theology of <strong>denied the incarnation real Christ<\/strong>, relativizara the material creation or propose a salvation only to an elite of initiates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Level controversial\/propaganda<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The heresi\u00f3logos used to describe the gnostic sects with <strong>accusations of sexual debauchery and rituals obscene<\/strong> (coitus interruptus, ritual consumption of semen, etc), in this case associated especially at the <strong>Gospel of Eve<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is not clear how much is a faithful description and how much <strong>cartoon controversy<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>In any case, the <strong>Gospel of Perfection soon passed to the category of \u201cbanned book and lost\u201d<\/strong> in the catholic tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMany hear the message, but only the perfect ones understand it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. The gospel in the modern research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6.1. Rank in the current critical<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In handbooks and dictionaries modern, the Gospel of Perfection appears:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the group of <strong>\u201capocryphal gospels lost\u201d<\/strong>, along with others such as the <strong>Gospel of the egyptians<\/strong>, the <strong>Gospel of the nazarenes<\/strong>, etc<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Often with the note succinct: \u201cIt's supposed source gnostic; we only know of its existence to the statements of Epiphanius, and Filastrio; nothing is known of their contents.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6.2. Hypothesis identification<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three major lines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Gospel of Perfection = Gospel of Eve<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Based on the <strong>closeness in the lists<\/strong> from Epiphanius, the association to the same groups, and the fact that the Gospel of Eve is described as the text of gnosis \u201cconsumadora\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gospel of Perfection = Gospel of Philip<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some authors, ancient or modern, have suggested that the mention of Epiphanius could be referring to an early form of the <strong>Gospel of Philip<\/strong> (as the Nag Hammadi), also focused on <strong>mysteries of initiation<\/strong> and symbolism bridal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gospel of Perfection = different text which is now lost<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is the more prudent approach: given that Epiphanius <strong>named separately<\/strong> Gospel of Eve, the Gospel of Perfection and the Gospel of Philip, as honest is to treat them as <strong>three different titles<\/strong>although related to each other.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>There is No definitive evidence for any identification. The conclusion academic and most serious is: <strong>we don't know<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe visible deceives; the invisible instructs.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Meaning of the title: \u201cPerfection\u201d in front of the canonical Bible<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is interesting to confront the notion gnostic of <strong>\u201cperfection\u201d<\/strong> with the biblical notion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the New Testament, for example in <strong>Matthew 5,48<\/strong> (\u201cBe perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect\u201d), the Greek word <strong>teleios<\/strong> points to the <strong>full, ripe, full<\/strong> in love, not an elite esoteric.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the <strong>mysteries and gnosticism<\/strong>the \u201cperfect\u201d is the <strong>started top<\/strong>who has gone through <strong>rituals, revelations and secret symbols<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Gospel of Perfection<\/strong>by its title and context of gnostic, surely:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Had a <strong>an alternative vision of what it means to be \u201cperfect\u201d<\/strong>linked to <strong>gnosis<\/strong> and to a path of mystic initiation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offered, at least for its followers, a <strong>\u201cgospel\u201d (good news) of consummation<\/strong>, that is to say, the explanation of how the soul becomes fully to the light world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Church majority saw it as a <strong>appropriation and distortion<\/strong> language christian and biblical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. What is NOT the Gospel of Perfection (to avoid confusion)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It should be clarified that the <strong>\u201cThe gospel of Perfection\u201d apocryphal<\/strong> NOT to be confused with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The \u201cWay of Perfection\u201d by St. Teresa of Jesus<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Spiritual work of the SIXTEENTH century, is sometimes interpreted metaphorically as a \u201cgospel\u201d of the inner life, but there is an apocryphal gospel, nor has historical relationship with the text gnostic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reflections modern \u201cgospel and perfectionism\u201d<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Articles contemporary evangelicals or catholics who speak of \u201cthe gospel in the face of perfectionism psychological\u201d is another totally different thing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>When we speak here of the <strong>Gospel of Perfection<\/strong>, we refer exclusively to the <strong>text gnostic lost of the III\u2013IV century<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Final synthesis: \u201ceverything that can be known\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a scheme very direct:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Existence and nature<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There was a text called the <strong>\u201cThe gospel of Perfection \/ Evangelium perfectionis\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Was <strong>apocryphal, gnostic, and considered heretical<\/strong> by the ancient Church.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sources<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Only what we know by the <strong>mentions of Epiphanius of Salamis (Panarion 26)<\/strong> and <strong>Filastrio of Brescia (Liber de haeresibus 33)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Content<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Has not remained any fragment<\/strong> clearly identifiable.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Possibly it was connected with other gnostic texts focused on <strong>Eva, Mary Magdalene, Seth, Adam, the serpent, etc<\/strong>, and with the idea of <strong>\u201cperfection\u201d as the culmination gnostic<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any detailed description of your narrative or teachings is <strong>speculation<\/strong>, not historical fact.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Relationships text<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some identify him with the <strong>Gospel of Eve<\/strong> or with a form of the <strong>Gospel of Philip<\/strong>but there is no conclusive evidence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Theological value and historical<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is a <strong>piece of the map of the gnostic gospels<\/strong>: shows that, already in the first centuries, there was a <strong>multiplicity of \u201cgospels\u201d private<\/strong>, designed for specific groups, with a <strong>esoteric doctrine on perfection<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>His disappearance is likely due to the <strong>sentence ecclesial<\/strong> and the fact that <strong>no one copied it<\/strong> in the manuscript tradition later.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe initiated are not looking for a new world: seeks to awaken in the real.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A \u201cfull and detailed study\u201d on the Gospel of Perfection has necessarily this limit: <strong>there is no text that comment<\/strong>, only the <strong>name, the environment gnostic and the trials of their opponents<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What we can say with certainty is that this gospel:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It was a <strong>written by gnostic<\/strong>probably in the court of initiation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Circulated in <strong>groups heretics of the century, III\u2013IV<\/strong> (borboritas\/gnostics).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was presented as \u201cgospel\u201d to the <strong>perfect<\/strong>in a different sense of the evangelical perfection canonical.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Was <strong>rejected and disappeared<\/strong>, leaving only the echo of his title in the polemics of the Church fathers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Evangelio de la Perfecci\u00f3n: qu\u00e9 fue y qu\u00e9 sabemos<\/p>","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":870,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[522],"class_list":{"0":"post-869","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-protocristianismo","8":"tag-el-evangelio-de-la-perfeccion"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.3 -
