What is the Gospel of the ebionites<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We do not possess the gospel as a book, but <strong>only seven fragments<\/strong> cited by <strong>Epiphanius of Salamis<\/strong> in his work heresiol\u00f3gica <em>Panarion<\/em> (ca. 377 d. C.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Epiphanius says that it is the gospel used by a sect judeo-christian call <strong>ebionites<\/strong>, and calls it \u201cthe gospel according to Matthew\u201d or \u201cgospel Hebrew\u201d, but what makes it so confusing. The modern name \u201cGospel of the ebionites\u201d is pure academic agreement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The original text was a <strong>harmony of the synoptic gospels<\/strong> (Matthew\u2013Mark\u2013Luke), written in <strong>Greek<\/strong>, with additions and omissions that reflect the theology of the author.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In short: it is a gospel <strong>apocryphal judeo-christian<\/strong>, lost as an independent work, rebuilt from dating hostile to the author of the fourth century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Sources and transmission: Epiphanius, and the <em>Panarion<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our only source is the chapter 30 of <em>Panarion<\/em>, where Epiphanius combat the ebionites:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <em>Panarion<\/em> it is a \u201cmedicine chest against heresies\u201d: Epiphanius describes groups that it considered deviant and quote his texts to refute them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Of the ebionites, preserves <strong>seven quotes or summaries<\/strong> of his gospel, scattered in the 30.13, 30.14, 30.16, and 30.22.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your appointments are <strong>partial ordered in a confused way<\/strong> and mixed with comments and assumptions of its own; that is why the reconstruction is necessarily hypothetical.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Critically, modern studies attempt to separate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What seems to quote literal or almost literal of the gospel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is interpretation or controversy of Epiphanius.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe purity is not conquest rituals, but with acts.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Dating, place, language and literary genre<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dating<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The majority of specialists situates the gospel in the <strong>half of the second century<\/strong> (approx. 130-160 d. C.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reasons:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is a <strong>harmony synoptic<\/strong>, a genre typical of that time (such as the <em>Diatessaron<\/em> of Tatian).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does not depend on the Gospel of John, which fits with an environment where it is not yet hegemonic the \u201cfour gospels\u201d of the Great Church.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Place of origin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Probable origin in the <strong>region east of the Jordan<\/strong> (Transjordan), where the patristic sources located communities ebionites.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Language and gender<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Composite in <strong>Greek<\/strong>not in Hebrew or aramaic, unlike what Epiphanius thought.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is a <strong>harmony gospel<\/strong>: an account only, which combines and rewrites the synoptic gospels, selecting, summarizing, by changing words and adding elements theological own.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe truth does not destroy the Torah, the lights.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Relationship with the other gospels judeo-christian<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gospel of the ebionites is one of several gospels judeo-christian:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Gospel of the hebrews<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gospel of the nazarenes<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Probably related to a lost text called <strong>\u201cGospel of the Twelve\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>All of them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They survive only in quotations patristic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They are linked to the christian communities of jewish origin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The majority of specialists (Klijn and others) believes that the Gospel of the ebionites is <strong>a different text<\/strong>, known only to Epiphanius, not simply another version of the \u201cgospel in Hebrew\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Content known: the seven fragments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We do not have the entire text, but appointments can be identified issues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.1. Harmony of the synoptic gospels<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The gospel seems to follow the general sequence of the synoptics, but:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dispenses <strong>stories of childhood<\/strong> (there is no virgin birth or genealogy). Epiphanius says explicitly that \u201chave been removed by the genealogies of Matthew\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rewrite the key scenes in function of their theology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.2. The baptism of Jesus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the scene of the baptism:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Combine elements of Matthew, Mark and Luke.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>Holy spirit descends in the form of a dove and enter into Jesus<\/strong>stressing a point of choice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The voice from heaven quotes Psalm 2.7 in the \u201cwestern\u201d version of Luke: \u201cThou art my Son, <strong>today I have begotten you<\/strong>\u201d<br>in place of the more well-known \u201cin thee I am well pleased\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Theologically, this supports a <strong>christology adoptionist<\/strong>: Jesus is a righteous man who, in baptism, is adopted as a Son of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.3. John the Baptist and the question of diet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the description of John:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Preserves the clothing of camel skin and leather belt, as in the synoptics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But you change the diet: instead of \u201clocusts and wild honey\u201d (akrides), the text speaks of <strong>honey it tasted like manna, like a cake baked in oil<\/strong> (<em>egkris<\/em>), a kind of cake or pancake.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is interpreted commonly referred to as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Re-reading <strong>vegetarian<\/strong> the figure of John.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allusion to the manna of the desert (Exodus 16; Numbers 11) or the cakes 1 Kings 19,6 (Elijah), reinforcing the continuity of the prophets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.4. Rejection of animal sacrifices<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Other significant fragment presents Jesus:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>By abolishing the sacrifices jews<\/strong> and ordered that they stop killing animals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In related texts (such as the <em>Ascents of James<\/em> in the <em>Acknowledgements Clementinos<\/em>), this abolition is attached to the replacement for the <strong>baptism with water for the remission of sins<\/strong>, which harmonizes well with the theology of the gospel ebionita.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This fits in with christianity, jewish:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Critical of the cult's sacrificial Temple.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oriented towards an ethic of life (including diet) as a true \u201cworship\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.5. The Last Supper, and the meat<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In a version of the last supper (based on Luke 22):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The text adds the word <strong>\u201cmeat\u201d<\/strong> (sarx) in the phrase: \u201cI have desired to eat this <em>meat<\/em> of Passover with you...\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This insertion is understood as a <strong>rationalization of abstinence from meat<\/strong>: Jesus declares that he will not eat \u201cmeat\u201d until the kingdom of God, which allows you to justify a practice vegetarian in the community.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.6. Food standards and \u201cflesh with a soul\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Epiphanius, citing this gospel and other traditions ebionites, he says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The ebionites abstaining from \u201cflesh with a soul in it\u201d, that is to say, animal meat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Although not all of this comes directly from the fragments, it shows how the text was read in key <strong>vegetarian<\/strong> and antimacr\u00edfica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe light does not descend into lineages, but on the lives of dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Theology of the Gospel of the ebionites<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6.1. Christology adoptionist and \u201clow\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Key features:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>There is No virgin birth or genealogy davidic developed<\/strong>: skipped the first few chapters of Matthew.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jesus is presented as a righteous man, chosen by God in the <strong>baptism<\/strong> (Ps 2,7: \u201ctoday I have begotten you\u201d).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is typical of a <strong>christology adoptionist<\/strong>: Jesus is not a pre-existing or of one substance with the Father, but is adopted as a Son.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6.2. The Holy spirit and anointing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The descent of the Spirit \u201cthat go into It\u201d reinforces the idea of a <strong>anointing prophetic<\/strong>: the Spirit not only drops, but that it penetrates Jesus, marking the beginning of his mission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6.3. Soteriology: baptism and ethics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Salvation is linked to:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Repentance and baptism<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A style of life that includes <strong>observance of the Torah<\/strong> and <strong>rejection of sacrifices<\/strong> and meat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There is No development of explicit theology of the cross in the style of paul; the shaft is rather the <strong>practice<\/strong> and the fidelity to an interpretation of \u201cpure\u201d of the Law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6.4. Law, sacrifices, and vegetarianism<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The ebionites, according to the patristic sources, insisted:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Observe the <strong>Law of Moses<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reject <strong>Paul<\/strong> and his letters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only accept a gospel judeo-christian (to Epiphanius, \u201caccording to Matthew\u201d).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The gospel that we are concerned with, fit with this position:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Condemns the slaughter of animals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Associated with Jesus and John the Baptist with a practice food <strong>vegetarian<\/strong> or almost.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe mystery of Jesus is not in its origin but in its choice.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. The ebionites as a movement and its relationship to the gospel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7.1. Who were the ebionites<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Church Fathers (Irenaeus, Eusebius, Epiphanius):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Group judeo-christian that she saw Jesus as <strong>Messiah human<\/strong>, is not divine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They insisted on:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Circumcision.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Observance of the Law.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rejection of Paul and his letters.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of a single gospel judeo-christian.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7.2. Does it reflect the gospel the theology of the ebionites primitive?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here there's debate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Irenaeus (h. 185 d. C.) describe some ebionites that don't quite fit with the image that gives Epiphanius two centuries later.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some authors (Luomanen, others) think:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There may have been <strong>evolution doctrinal<\/strong> the ebionismo.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or that Epiphanius mix traditions of <strong>several groups<\/strong> and project all about \u201cthe ebionites\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In any case, the Gospel of the ebionites is a key piece to understand <strong>a branch hellenized the judeo-christianism<\/strong>possibly different of the ebionites oldest of Palestine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe Spirit descends on who is prepared to receive it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Academic Debates around the gospel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8.1. How ebionita is it really?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some see the gospel as <strong>representative<\/strong> theology ebionita late.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Others suspect that:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It can be a harmony that is used by multiple groups, judeo-christian, not only by the ebionites.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Epiphanius uses it as a weapon against a set of currents judeo-christian, not necessarily homogeneous.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8.2. Relationship with Gospel of the hebrews \/ nazarenes \/ Twelve<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There's discussion on whether:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Are different texts of the same \u201ccorpus Hebrew\u201d, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Truly works different.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The majority consensus is today: the Gospel of the ebionites, as harmony in Greek, is <strong>distinct and recognizable<\/strong>, although it may depend on traditions of jewish prior.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8.3. What vegetarianism central or exaggeration?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The quotes about the diet of John, and the interpolations of \u201cmeat\u201d in the dinner in support of a <strong>ethics vegetarian<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But we discuss:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If vegetarianism was really central to all of the ebionites.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or if certain groups radicalized, and Epiphanius as amplified by controversy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe Messiah doesn't break the Law: live it to the fullest.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Importance for the study of early christianity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gospel of the ebionites is crucial for several reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Diversity christological<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shows that in the second century there were gospels with a <strong>christology non-trinitarian, adoptionist<\/strong>, fully integrated into christian communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Competition gospels<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before you consolidated the canon, coexisted:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gospels individual (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Harmonies<\/strong> as this gospel and the <em>Diatessaron<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This shows a christianity still very fluent in your library \u201csacred\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Persistence of the judeo-christianism<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The text is evidence that, at the century II\u2013IV, there were still communities that:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is defined as a jewish and christian at the same time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Criticized the worship of the Temple and the interpretations of pauline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>History of christian ethics (sacrifices, meat, vegetarianism)<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It contributes to the debate on:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The rejection of animal sacrifices after the destruction of the Temple (70 ce. C.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The place of vegetarianism in certain currents of early christian.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10.
