What is the Gospel of Judas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The so-called \u201cGospel of Judas\u201d is an apocryphal gospel of character gnostic, transmitted in coptic (egyptian christian) in the so-called <strong>Codex Tchacos<\/strong>. It is a <strong>\u201cgospel\u201ddialog<\/strong>: a series of conversations between Jesus and the disciples, and especially Jesus and Judas Iscariot, which develop a few days before the crucifixion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basic points:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This is not a text of the first century, or a direct testimony of Judas: the majority of specialists are among <strong>130-180 d.C.<\/strong>in a christian environment gnostic Greek language.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The manuscript that we have is a <strong>translation coptic<\/strong> from the original Greek, copied to the century III\u2013IV d.C. (carbon-14 dating of the codex around 280 d.C. \u00b1 60 years).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was known already in Antiquity: <strong>Irenaeus of Lyon<\/strong> (ca. 180 d.C.) mentioned a \u201cGospel of Judas\u201d in <em>Against heresies<\/em> 1.31.1, attributed to a group of gnostic called <strong>cainitas<\/strong>that they elevated to biblical figures \u201cbad\u201d as Cain and Judas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Modern history of the manuscript (Codex Tchacos)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.1 Discovery and journey<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The codex was found in the 70s in <strong>Egypt medium<\/strong>probably in a cave or tomb.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Passed through the hands of anticuaristas, suffered from years of improper storage (one box of safety in EE. UU., humidity, fungus), was fragmented and heavily deteriorated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was finally acquired by the swiss foundation <strong>Maecenas Foundation for Ancient Art<\/strong>, who commissioned its restoration and editing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.2 Publication and project National Geographic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In 2006, the <strong>National Geographic Society<\/strong> publicly presented the text as restored, with critical edition, translation, and a tv documentary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The volume academic major was edited by <strong>Rodolphe Kasser, Marvin Meyer, and Gregor Wurst<\/strong>, <em>The Gospel of Judas from Codex Tchacos<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There were disputes: some specialists (for example, <strong>April DeConick<\/strong>) criticized the first popular translation by filing a \u201cJudas good\u201d and accused the National Geographic of errors of translation and emphasis of the media.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.3 Content of the Codex Tchacos<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The codex does not contain only the Gospel of Judas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Letter of Peter to Philip<\/strong> (gnostic)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>First Apocalypse of James<\/strong> (different version to Nag Hammadi)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gospel of Judas<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An anonymous text (sometimes called <em>Book of Al\u00f3genes<\/em> or similar, depending on the assumptions).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIn this text, Judas is not a villain: is the dark mirror where the gnosis reflects its contradictions.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Literary genre and structure of the Gospel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.1 Gospel of dialogue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It is not a \u201clife of Jesus\u201d in the style Mark or Luke; it is a revelatory text:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jesus appears <strong>as a developer gnostic<\/strong>who is laughing at the disciples because they do not understand the true reality.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The plot is organized in <strong>four appearances<\/strong> of Jesus, along about eight days before the Passover, with dialogues with Twelve or with Judas in private.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.2 basic Structure (summary)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Introduction<\/strong>: Jesus was manifested to his disciples, performs signs and miracles, but they don't understand him.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scene of the laughing Jesus<\/strong>: Jesus laughs of the cult disciples to offer to God, because he is directed to the wrong god (the demiurge, not the supreme Father).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Call of Judas<\/strong>: Judas is separated from the others and acknowledges that Jesus is coming of the kingdom of the great invisible Spirit; Jesus reveals the special secrets.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Great revelation of cosmological<\/strong>: Jesus explains the origin of the universe, the aeons, angels, the demiurge and the human generations, in key <strong>setiana<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fate of Judas<\/strong>: it was announced that Judas \u201cwill overcome\u201d to the other disciples, but also to suffer marginalization.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Closing narrative<\/strong>: the chief priests discussed how to turn to Jesus; Judas presents to give to Jesus and the story closes with this action, without narrating the crucifixion.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Content theological and cosmological<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.1 Context of gnostic and setiano<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The majority of specialists consider it a gospel <strong>gnostic setiano<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It exalts the \u201crace\u201d or <strong>seed Set<\/strong>, the son of Adam is associated with the spiritual lineage authentic; this connects the text with other writings setians of Nag Hammadi.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A distinction is made between the <strong>Supreme god of the invisible<\/strong> and <strong>archons\/angels creators<\/strong> (including an inferior god who rules this material world).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Topics typically gnostics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The material world is the product of a <strong>inferior god<\/strong> ignorant or malignant.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Salvation is receiving <strong>gnosis<\/strong> (revealed knowledge), which allow the soul to return to the kingdom of light.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.2 Vision of Jesus<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jesus appears as <strong>emanation<\/strong> or messenger of the higher realm, not so much as the jewish Messiah historical.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are indications of a <strong>christology doceta<\/strong>: the emphasis is on the spiritual being of Jesus, not his flesh, and the text ignores passion, death and resurrection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.3 The figure of Judas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the core controversial:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Judas is the only disciple <strong>understand the true origin of Jesus<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jesus says that it will be <strong>\u201cthe thirteenth\u201d<\/strong>, separated from the other, and that will surpass because it will offer \u201cthe man who I was\u201d (that is to say, the material body of Jesus) for compliance with the plan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Irenaeus already said that the cainitas worshipped Judas as a hero gnostic, because when you surrender to Jesus would have allowed the release of the spirit of the Saviour of the material world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What Judas is \u201cgood\u201d? There are two major lines performing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Read \u201crehabilitative\u201d<\/strong> (first wave media): Judas acts in obedience to Jesus and meets a secret mission, so that his betrayal is not treason, but of collaboration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Critical reading later<\/strong> (DeConick, and others): the Judas of the gospel remains negative; it is the disciple who is associated with the rulers of the astral and his \u201cstar\u201d is bound up with the fate of the demons; it is rather a <strong>\u201cesoteric wrong\u201d<\/strong> that ends up serving the god below.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The discussion depends on nuances and philological: for example, if certain terms are translated as \u201cthou shalt be exalted\u201d, or \u201cyou'll be the paragraph\/damn,\u201d etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe biggest secret of the Gospel of Judas, not Judas, but the image of a Jesus who laughs at the ignorance of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Compared to the canonical Gospels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.1 Differences narratives<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The canonical gospels presents Judas as the traitor moved by greed, and the influence of Satan or the fulfillment of the Scriptures (Mc 14; Mt 26-27; Luke 22; John 13).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Gospel of Judas <strong>it does not speak about the psychological motivation or repentance<\/strong>; simply integrates the delivery of Jesus in a plan of revelation gnostic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Key points of contrast:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The absence of passion and resurrection<\/strong>: the text ends before the crucifixion, do not speak of resurrection, and this is why the scholars consider it a document heretical christian who does not share the kerygma basic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The absence of sacraments<\/strong>: criticizes the cult of the eucharist and the liturgy of the disciples, seen as sacrifices to the god below.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Church and apostles<\/strong>: the text seems to be how to debate against <strong>Great Church<\/strong> century II (leaders, bishops, martyrs), presenting the Twelve figures deceived, serving the cosmos lower.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.2 canonical Status<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It was never considered canonical by the churches from the majority.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Already in the second century, Irenaeus complaint explicitly as a <strong>\u201cfictional history\u201d<\/strong> (<em>fictional history<\/em>), and as the gospel of a heretic group.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>non-inclusion in the canon<\/strong> not due to a conspiracy late, but that was a text late, in such and theologically incompatible with the preaching of the majority.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Reception old: the cainitas and other gnostic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Irenaeus, and other patristic sources:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The gospel would have been used by the <strong>cainitas<\/strong>, group a gnostic who revered characters \u201ccursed\u201d AT: Cain, the sodomites, etc, as the elect of Wisdom (Sophia) against the inferior god.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In that logic, Judas would be a <strong>\u201cstarted\u201d<\/strong> that breaks up the plan of the demiurge, and collaborates with, consciously or not, with the plan of the upper God.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Fathers of the Church are cited only for refuting it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Irenaeus, <em>Against heresies<\/em> 1.31.1<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Later, Epiphanius, and other catalogues of heresies mentioned gospels \u201cJudas\u201d or similar, always on a polemical.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Rediscovery and contemporary academic debates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7.1 historical Value<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost all the specialists serious match in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Historically, it tells us nothing new about the Judas of the century I<\/strong>, or about Jesus as a historical character.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Yes it is a <strong>source of the first order on the gnostic christianity of the second century<\/strong>especially the setianismo.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words: it's not \u201chistorical\u201d in regard to the life of Jesus, but very important to understand the evolution of the christian ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7.2 The controversy about the \u201crehabilitation\u201d of Judas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The release of 2006 he insisted on a reading of \u201cJudas\u201d hero, exploited by media and documentaries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>April DeConick (<em>The Thirteenth Apostle.<\/em>), and others showed that several translations key can read more negatively:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>where the popular version said, \u201cthou shalt be exalted above all\u201d, some of the manuscripts and contexts allow you to read \u201cyou'll be separated from all the generations\u201d or phrases equivalent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Today the majority consensus is that the text <strong>does not convert to Judas in a holy<\/strong>but that shows it as a figure of ambiguous or even tragic: you have access to a revelation superior, but at the same time is linked to the lower powers and a destiny grim.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe Judas gnostic does not betray: run a destiny written in the stars.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Key topics for a background analysis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8.1 Criticism of the cult and the institutional church<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The passage where Jesus laughs of the sacrifice that the disciples believe offer the \u201cGod of Israel\u201d is a direct criticism of the <strong>cult of sacrifice and the eucharist in the great Church<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The church leaders that promote martyrdom and liturgy would be, for the author, servants of the god creator and lower, not of the supreme Father.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8.2 The occasion of the \u201cstar of Judas\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Jesus says to Judas, \u201cthe star that leads the way is your star,\u201d astral image that links to a cosmic destiny particular.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The stars represent <strong>eons, generations or souls<\/strong>; Judas is the figure of a generation that will play a role transgressor within the cosmic drama.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8.3 The rejection of martyrdom<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In contrast with the christian literature of the second century that exalts the martyrdom, the Gospel of Judas <strong>it rejects the martyrdom physical<\/strong>: to die for the god of the material world would be, for the author, an error occurred.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The true salvation does not pass through shed blood, but to receive the gnosis and escape to the domain of the archons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Status of the text: gaps, problems and philological<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The manuscript is <strong>highly fragmented<\/strong> and presents many gaps; there are passages with reconstructions of the hypothetical.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The first edition of Kasser\u2013Meyer\u2013Wurst already included extensive notes on alternative readings; subsequent investigations have proposed corrections in several verses key (especially those that affect the role of Judas).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are now multiple translations to English and other languages (some with free access), which reflect these discussions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10.
