Basic classification of foods<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>From here it follows the classic structure of the berachot on food:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bread of the five grains \u2192<\/strong> \u201cHamotz\u00ed lejem min ha \u00e1retz\u201d + Birkat Hammaz\u00f3n after.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wine and grape juice \u2192<\/strong> \u201cBor\u00e9 warranty hag\u00e1fen\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fruit of tree \u2192<\/strong> \u201cBor\u00e9 per\u00ed ha etz\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fruits of the earth, and vegetables \u2192<\/strong> \u201cBor\u00e9 per\u00ed ha adam\u00e1\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Other foods (meat, fish, cheese, eggs, drinks not wine, etc) \u2192<\/strong> \u201cShehakol nihy\u00e1 bidvar\u00f3\u201d (Not mentioned in this Mishnah, but it is the sixth general category).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mishnah is concentrated in <strong>the first three categories vegetables<\/strong> and it highlights two special products that come out of the general rule: bread and wine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.2. Central Idea<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Mishnah teaches that <strong>not all foods are equal to the level of spiritual and halachic<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Certain foods, for its central role in jewish life and worship, receive <strong>specific blessings and more \u201cactors\u201d<\/strong> (bread and wine), even though technically, they may enter into a general category.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Exception: the wine and \u201cBor\u00e9 warranty hag\u00e1fen\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mishnah emphasizes that, although the wine is made from grapes (fruit tree), <strong>its bracha is unique<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cBor\u00e9 warranty hag\u00e1fen\u201d \u2013 Creator of the fruit of the see<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the wine has a bracha special?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The Talmud (Berachot 35a-b) and the subsequent literature give several reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Qualitative transformation:<\/strong> the grape changes significantly to turn into wine; it is not just grape juice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Centrality ritual:<\/strong> the wine is used for the majority of the jewish ceremonies:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Kiddush of Shabbat and holidays,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Havdal\u00e1,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>weddings, brit milah, etc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use in the Temple:<\/strong> the wine is poured as a libation on the altar, together with certain sacrifices, giving it a status as liturgical high.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>That's why, although it could have been under <strong>ha etz<\/strong>, the Wise established a formula independent that reflects your <strong>spiritual status and higher social<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Practical range<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Grape juice<\/strong> (not fermented) also receives <strong>\u201cBor\u00e9 warranty hag\u00e1fen\u201d<\/strong>because it shares the same origin and ritual use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alcoholic beverages from other fruits or cereals (beer, cider, liquors, etc..) <strong>no<\/strong> enter hag\u00e1fen, but in <strong>shehakol<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.3. \u201cOn the fruits of the earth: Bor\u00e9 per\u00ed ha adam\u00e1\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here the Mishnah enters the second major category: everything that grows from the earth but <strong>no<\/strong> it is considered the \u201ctree\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Vegetables: lettuce, tomato, cucumber, carrot, onion, etc<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fruit plants low or non-perennial (banana, pineapple, strawberry, melon, according to number of views, etc).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Legumes, grains in many performances, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>General blessing: <strong>\u201cBor\u00e9 per\u00ed ha adam\u00e1\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hierarchy versus ha etz<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As already indicated:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ha adam\u00e1 is <strong>wider<\/strong>; you can cover, a posteriori, the fruit of tree<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Borei_Pri_HaEtz?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">.<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>That's why, in <strong>case of doubt<\/strong> if something is a tree or the ground (for example, species new or confusing), many poskim recommend saying <strong>ha adam\u00e1<\/strong> to avoid a beraj\u00e1 in vain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.4. Exception: the bread and \u201cHamotz\u00ed lejem min ha \u00e1retz\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the bread, materially, is \u201cthe fruit of the earth,\u201d the Mishnah what separates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cOn the bread, it is said: \u2018Hamotz\u00ed lejem min ha \u00e1retz\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does the bread different?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Staple universal:<\/strong> the bread of the five grains (wheat, barley, spelt, rye, oat, according to some definitions) is the <strong>mainstay<\/strong> in the diet classic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Base of the seud\u00e1:<\/strong> a meal with bread is considered a <strong>a full meal<\/strong> and drag other food under their framework of blessings (the principle of <strong>'ikar ve tafel<\/strong>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Birkat Hammaz\u00f3n:<\/strong> after eating bread in a minimal amount (kezait), is recited <strong>Birkat Hammaz\u00f3n<\/strong>a blessing extensive biblical origins.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Netilat yadayim:<\/strong> before eating bread is required <strong>ritual washing of hands<\/strong> with beraj\u00e1 (according to the rules of netilat yadayim).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>That is to say, the bread is <strong>the food emblematic of humanity<\/strong> in halachah: concentrated human work (ploughing, planting, harvesting, grinding, kneading dough, bake) and it therefore has a status liturgical top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.5. \u201cAbout the herbs and vegetables: Bor\u00e9 per\u00ed ha adam\u00e1\u201d \u2013 Opinion of the majority<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mishnah distinguishes finally:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cYerakot\u201d (vegetable, edible herbs) \u2192 <strong>ha adam\u00e1<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Leafy vegetables (lettuce, swiss chard, spinach).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stems and edible herbs (parsley, cilantro, celery, etc).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sprouts and green plants in general.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4.6. The opinion of Rabbi Yehuda: \u201cBor\u00e9 minei deshaim\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rabbi Yehuda holds that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Which vegetables and herbs deserve a bracha more specific: \u201cBor\u00e9 minei deshaim\u201d \u2013 Who creates various kinds of herbs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Talmud discusses this proposal, and the decision is <strong>do not follow it<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Halachah:<\/strong> it maintains the general formula <strong>ha adam\u00e1<\/strong> also for vegetables and herbs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the stock of this opinion shows a conceptual tension:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is it worth more <strong>precision<\/strong> (mention \u201cherbs\u201d specifically), or <strong>unification<\/strong> (a bracha for all the products of the earth)?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Wise choose the <strong>unification practice<\/strong>to avoid confusion and multiplication of unnecessary formulas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Criteria hal\u00e1jicos derivatives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.1. Technical definition of tree<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As we saw, the halachah does not follow the language of the people, but the technical criteria:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Trunk standing:<\/strong> if the trunk lasts several years, and then the fruit on the same tree trunk \u2192 <strong>ha etz<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Plant that renews or boots each year:<\/strong> although fruit is considered <strong>ha adam\u00e1<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>This affects the bracha of many tropical crops, and modern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.2. Hierarchy of specificity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It provides a kind of <strong>pyramid<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bread and wine \u2192 berachot <strong>more specific and high<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then ha etz, then ha adam\u00e1.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Last shehakol, which covers everything that does not fit in the above.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Golden rule:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In case of doubt between two categories, we choose the <strong>more generally acceptable bediavad<\/strong> (for example, ha adam\u00e1 in front of ha etz).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.3. Relationship with \u201c'ikar ve tafel\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although not mentioned here, this Mishnah is the basis for another principle of the same chapter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When a food is <strong>main ('ikar)<\/strong> and another is <strong>secondary (tafel)<\/strong>makes the bracha only by the principal.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bread and wine, for his great hierarchy, tend to become the <strong>'ikar<\/strong> of the food or of the act of ritual.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Practical applications of modern<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bread, biscuits, pasta, cakes, flour, etc<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Classic bread: <strong>hamotz\u00ed<\/strong> + Birkat Hammaz\u00f3n.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cakes, biscuits, pastries, breakfast cereals based grain: typically wear <strong>\u201cBor\u00e9 minei mezonot\u201d<\/strong> (another category to be learned from this same framework, not formulated explicitly in the Mishnah but is derived from the five grains, cooked or baked with no pan of seud\u00e1).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wine and grape juice<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Red, white, ros\u00e9, sparkling wine, grape juice pasteurized \u2192 <strong>hag\u00e1fen<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apple cider or alcoholic beverages from other fruits \u2192 <strong>shehakol<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fresh fruits<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Apple, pear, orange, peach, etc \u2192 <strong>ha etz<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Banana, pineapple, strawberry \u2192 <strong>ha adam\u00e1<\/strong>, by the criterion of the trunk is not permanent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vegetables and salads<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Salad of lettuce, tomato, cucumber \u2192 <strong>ha adam\u00e1<\/strong> (if the main intention is to greens).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dishes mixed<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If a dish contains a variety of foods with different berachot, you must analyze:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is there a <strong>main food<\/strong> that defines the dish?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What others are accompaniment (sauce, seasoning, garnish secondary)?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the bread is present in sufficient quantity, it is usually to \u201ccover\u201d the rest of us by hamotz\u00ed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7.
