Terminology and function<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keyword: <strong>jalom<\/strong> (\u05d7\u05b2\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9\u05dd) = sleep.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other terms: <strong>mar eh<\/strong> (vision), <strong>jaz\u00f3n<\/strong> (prophetic vision).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the Bible, dreams relevant almost always appear:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In <strong>contexts of revelation<\/strong> (patriarchs, kings, prophets).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or <strong>critical moments of the story<\/strong> (future of Israel, empires, large crisis).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Main functions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Disclose the future<\/strong> (Joseph, Daniel, Pharaoh, Nebuchadnezzar).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>To warn and protect<\/strong> (dream Abim\u00e9lec about Sara; Laban warned not to harm Jacob; dreams of Joseph the husband of Mary in the NT, although it is christian literature).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Comfort and confirm alliances<\/strong> (covenant with Abraham in Gen 15; Jacob at Beth-El with the ladder, Gen 28).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>To discern and to impose authority<\/strong>: Joseph and Daniel are legitimized as performers, showing that the <strong>interpretation belongs to God<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cIsn't God's interpretations?\u201d (Gen 40:8).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cThere is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries...\u201d (Dan 2:28).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.2. Paradigmatic cases<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Patriarchs<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Abraham: the trance of \u201cdeep sleep\u201d (tardem\u00e1) in Gen 15, where it is revealed the slavery and redemption in the future.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jacob: dream of the ladder with angels going up and down (Genesis 28). Interpreted as a <strong>union between heaven and earth<\/strong>; later Kabbalah is used as an image of the soul in ascent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Joseph (Genesis 37-41)<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dreams <strong>symbolic<\/strong> (sheaves, stars, cows, corn), which anticipate its ascent, and by the famine in Egypt.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Key theological: the dreams not only advertise, <strong>running<\/strong> the divine plan in history.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dreams of heathen kings<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pharaoh<\/strong> (Gen 41): your sleep requires a Hebrew (Joseph) to be decrypted.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nebuchadnezzar<\/strong> (Dan 2 and 4): dream of the statue and the tree; Daniel reveals the fragility of the empires.<br>In both cases, the sleep works as <strong>power shift<\/strong>: the king depends on the Hebrew prophet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Later prophets<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Joel 3:1 (2:28): \u201cyour old men shall dream dreams, your young men will see visions\u201d. Dream like <strong>democratization of the spiritual experience<\/strong> in the last few days.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jeremiah 23: complaint to the false prophets who say, \u201cI have dreamed\u201d and speak from your heart, not from God.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.3. The dreams in the Talmud<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The core section is <strong>Berachot 55a\u201357b<\/strong>, where the sages discussed extensively on dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.1. Affirmations key and its apparent tension<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dreams as near-prophecy<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cA dream is a sesentavo of the prophecy\u201d (Berachot 57b).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cThe outbreaks of the prophecy are your dreams\u201d (Bereishit Rabbah 17:7, cited after by Maimonides).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dreams as a confused mixture<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cThere is No dream without the elements vain\u201d (Ein jalom belo devarim beteilim).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Talmud mentions that the dream is also from the <strong>thoughts of the day<\/strong> (what you had in mind).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dreams as a message that requires interpretation<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cA dream which is not interpreted is like a letter that has not been read\u201d (Berachot 55a).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cAll dreams follow the interpretation of the mouth\u201d (kol jalomot holj\u00edm down hap\u00e9): the <strong>reading gives you<\/strong> influences how they perform.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dreams and morality<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Texts that say that a person totally just might see disturbing dreams to get her to be corrected, and that the evil can receive nice dreams as \u201cpayment\u201d in this world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The Talmud, therefore, sustains the same time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dreams <strong>potential prophetic real<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dreams <strong>mixture<\/strong> of revelation, fantasy and waste psychics.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>interpretation<\/strong> as a critical moment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.2. Practices hal\u00e1jicas around the dream<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Hatavat jalom<\/strong> (\u201cbetter sleep\u201d)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ritual where someone who had a dream-disturbing is presented to <strong>three people you trust<\/strong> (preferably scholars) and recite to them the texts of blessing and peace.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Idea: turn the \u201cdecree\u201d implicit in the dream into something beneficial.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ta'anit jalom<\/strong> (fasting for a dream)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Talmud allows for fast, even on Shabbat for a dream very distressing, to change to fast another day for having \u201csuffered\u201d on Shabbat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many poskim modern point out that <strong>today almost not practiced<\/strong>because \u201cwe are not experts in the interpretation of dreams\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The liturgical texts for Birkat Cohanim<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In many communities, who had disturbing dreams recites, at the time of the Birkat Kohanim, a prayer brief asking that all your dreams to become well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3.4. The dreams in the fall classic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the post-encoding (Shulchan Aruch and the poskim):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pick up the practical talmud<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fasting for dreams (ta'anit jalom) in Orach Chaim 288.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limits to fast on the eve of Yom Kippur, etc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But many decision-makers in post-emphasize:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In general, <strong>no decisions are made hal\u00e1jicas based on dreams<\/strong>; are, as a rule, an unreliable source for psak.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some kabbalists used dreams in specific cases, but was strongly criticized by rationalists such as Maimonides and also by authorities non-philosophical as Rashi and Ramban.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Conclusion halachic:<br>dreams can suggest introspection, tefillah, or even practices such as hatavat jalom, but <strong>do not replace or correct the written law and oral<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Dreams in the Kabbalah<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Here the focus shifts from \u201cprophetic message\u201d to <strong>soul dynamic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.1. The soul and its levels<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Kabbalah classic (Zohar, Arizal) speaks of five levels of the soul:<br><strong>Nefesh, Ruach, Neshama, Jaya, Yejid\u00e1<\/strong>, on different planes of consciousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In relation to the dream:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>While we sleep, <strong>the greater part of the soul rises to higher planes<\/strong>, leaving only a minimal fraction (1\/60) with the body to maintain life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In that state the soul:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Receives <strong>spiritual nurture<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may receive <strong>information on the past, present, and future<\/strong> in the form of dream symbols.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.2. Dreams, prophecy, and \u201ca mixture of worlds\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Zohar<\/strong> presents several core ideas:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The dream as <strong>prophecy<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Zohar 1:183a: dreams are a form of <strong>knowledge from a higher source<\/strong> and also an access route to the \u201cthoughts of the heart\u201d (hirhurei lev), that is to say, what depths of the soul.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The soul that ascends:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In Zohar Vayetze explains that during sleep the soul goes up and connects with higher levels where it receives light and wisdom; the dreams are the \u201cecho\u201d of that experience upon returning to the body.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Two types of dreams:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dreams that come from the <strong>side holy<\/strong> (angels, light, revelation, true).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dreams that come from the <strong>side \u201canother\u201d<\/strong> (sitra ajr\u00e1, impure forces, \u201cdemons\u201d), which confuse and deceive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some cabalistic texts say: \u201cA dream of the devil is 1\/60 of death; a dream of angel is 1 \/ 60th of prophecy\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The absence of dreams\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Kabbalistic traditions hold that if a person goes many days without dreams significant, that may indicate a blockage or spiritual domination of negative forces.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5.3. Read mystic case-bible<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Kabbalah rereads the great biblical dream:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Jacob and the ladder<\/strong> \u2192 map of the spiritual worlds and of the sefirot; the ladder is <strong>tefillah<\/strong> that binds up and down.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Joseph and Daniel<\/strong> \u2192 souls with a level of Neshama very high, able to translate dream symbols to prophetic language.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In Kabbalah, the sleep is no longer just a \u201cmessage\u201d and it happens to be <strong>experience of the soul's journey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Maimonides and the reading philosophical dreams<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Maimonides (Rambam), in the <strong>Guide of the Perplexed<\/strong>offers a vision that is more rational:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Prophecy = intellect + imagination<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The prophecy works with the <strong>intellect<\/strong> (truths), and the <strong>faculty of imagination<\/strong> (images and symbols).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All cases bible that \u201cGod speaks,\u201d except Moses Maimonides the redefined as <strong>visions or prophetic dreams<\/strong>not as conversation \u201cphysical\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dream ordinary vs. prophetic dream<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rambam cites the teaching that \u201ca dream is 1\/60 of prophecy,\u201d and the midrash that \u201cthe outbreaks of the prophecy are your dreams\u201d, explaining that it is due to that <strong>they operate the same faculty of imagination<\/strong>only that in the \u201craw and unfinished\u201d in the normal dream, and in so perfected in the prophet.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For him, most of the dreams are <strong>natural product of the imagination<\/strong>; the prophetic dreams occur only in individuals who have reached a very high level of perfection intellectual and moral.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>In summary:<br>where the Kabbalah speaks of \u201cjourney of the soul in the higher worlds\u201d, Rambam describes <strong>mental processes internal<\/strong> of imagination and intellect. Both accept that the dream may have prophetic dimension, but what conceptualized very differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Comparison: Bible \u2013 Talmud \u2013 Kabbalah<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I synthesized in axes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Origin of the content<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bible<\/strong>: God sends dreams to those who want to (a prophet, a king, even pagan).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Talmud<\/strong>: mixture of the divine message, thoughts of the day, and elements in vain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kabbalah<\/strong>: the soul ascends; you can connect with divine light, or with impure forces.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Level of authority<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bible<\/strong>: prophetic dreams can have absolute authority (if checked and they are consistent with the Torah).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Talmud<\/strong>: the dream <strong>never replaced<\/strong> to the Torah or the psak; is treated with respect, but with caution.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fall back<\/strong>: in general, it is not fixed halachah by dreams.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Instead of the interpretation<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bible<\/strong>: charismatic figure (Joseph, Daniel) plays with divine inspiration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Talmud<\/strong>\u201call dreams follow the mouth\u201d; the human interpretation <strong>active<\/strong> the content of the dream.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kabbalah<\/strong>: the interpretation requires knowledge of symbols spiritual (sephiroth, worlds, angels, etc).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Attitude practice<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Bible<\/strong>: if the dream is clearly of God demands obedience (ex: Joseph, Daniel).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Talmud\/Fall<\/strong>: it is recommended to tefillah, hatavat jalom and, in extreme cases, fasting; but be warned against panic and
