First Reading (aliyah 1)
Genesis 1:1–2:3
1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
1:2 The earth was formless and empty; darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
1:3 God said, “Let there be light.” And there was light.
1:4 God saw that the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness.
1:5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—day one.
1:6 Elohim said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.”
1:7 God made the expanse and separated the waters that were under the expanse from the waters that were above the expanse. And it was so.
1:8 God called the expanse "heaven." And there was evening, and there was morning: the second day.
1:9 God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so.
1:10 God called the dry land "land," and the gathering of the waters he called "seas." God saw that it was good.
1:11 God said, “Let the earth bring forth vegetation: plants yielding seed and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, according to their kinds, on the earth.” And it was so.
1:12 The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, according to their kinds. God saw that it was good.
1:13 It was late and it was morning: the third day.
1:14 God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark appointed times, days and years.
1:15 "Let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth." And so it was.
1:16 Elohim made the two great lights: the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night; he also made the stars.
1:17 Elohim placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth,
1:18 to govern by day and by night, and to separate light from darkness. God saw that it was good.
1:19 It was late and it was morning: the fourth day.
1:20 Elohim said, “Let the waters teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens.”
1:21 God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters teemed, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. God saw that it was good.
1:22 God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth.”
1:23 It was late and it was morning: day five.
1:24 God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creeping things, and beasts of the earth according to their kinds.” And it was so.
1:25 God made the animals of the earth according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. God saw that it was good.
1:26 God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
1:27 God created humankind in his own image; in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
1:28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living creature that moves on the earth.”
1:29 Elohim said, “Look: I have given you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth, and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will serve as food for you.
1:30 "To every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth and has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so.
1:31 God saw everything he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.
Genesis 2
2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the earth in them.
2:2 On the seventh day Elohim finished the work he had been doing, and on the seventh day he rested from all the work he had been doing.
2:3 God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he ceased from all the work of creation that God had done.

Second Reading (aliyah 2)
Genesis 2:4–2:19
2:4 These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created, on the day that HaShem Elohim made the earth and the heavens.
2:5 There was not yet any shrub of the field on the earth, nor had any plant of the field sprouted, for HaShem Elohim had not yet caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no human being to work the ground.
2:6 But a stream rose from the earth and watered the entire surface of the ground.
2:7 Then HaShem Elohim formed man from the dust of the ground, breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being.
2:8 HaShem Elohim planted a garden in Eden, toward the east, and there he placed the human being whom he had formed.
2:9 HaShem Elohim made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
2:10 A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it divided into four branches.
2:11 The name of the first was Pishon; it surrounded the entire land of Havilah, where there was gold.
2:12 The gold from that land was good; there was also bdellium and onyx stone.
2:13 The name of the second river was Gihon; it surrounded the entire land of Kush.
2:14 The name of the third river was Jidekel; it flowed east of Ashur. And the fourth river was the Euphrates.
2:15 HaShem Elohim took humankind and placed them in the garden of Eden to work it and protect it.
2:16 HaShem Elohim commanded humankind, saying, "You may freely eat of every tree of the garden.
2:17 But you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
2:18 HaShem Elohim said, “It is not good for man to be alone; I will make a helper suitable for him.”
2:19 The Lord God formed from the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky, and brought them before humankind to see what they would be called. Whatever the human being called each living creature, that would be its name.

Third Reading (aliyah 3)
Genesis 2:20–3:21
2:20 Humans gave names to all domestic animals, to the birds of the air, and to all the animals of the field; but for humankind, no suitable helper was found.
2:21 Then HaShem Elohim caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept. He took one of his sides and closed up the flesh in its place.
2:22 From the side that HaShem Elohim had taken from the human being, He formed a woman and brought her before the human being.
2:23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, for she was taken out of Man.”
2:24 That is why a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
2:25 Both were naked, the man and his wife, but they felt no shame.
Genesis 3
3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
3:2 The woman answered the serpent: “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden.
3:3 But concerning the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, God said, “Do not eat of it or touch it, lest you die.”
3:4 The serpent said to the woman, "You will certainly not die.
3:5 For God knows that when they eat of it their eyes will be opened and they will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
3:6 The woman saw that the tree was good for food, pleasing to the eye, and desirable for gaining wisdom. She took some of its fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
3:7 Then both of their eyes were opened and they realized they were naked. They sewed fig leaves together and made belts for themselves.
3:8 They heard the voice of HaShem Elohim, moving in the garden on the day breeze. The man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of HaShem Elohim among the trees of the garden.
3:9 HaShem Elohim called to the man and asked him, "Where are you?"
3:10 He replied, "I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid."
3:11 He asked him, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree from which I commanded you not to eat?”
3:12 The man replied, "The woman you put with me gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it."
3:13 HaShem Elohim asked the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman replied, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
3:14 HaShem Elohim said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life.
3:15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”
3:16 To the woman he said, “I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”
3:17 To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate fruit from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat from it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat food from it all the days of your life.
3:18 Thorns and thistles it will produce for you, and you will eat the plants of the field.
3:19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.
3:20 Adam named his wife Eve, because she would be the mother of all living beings.
3:21 HaShem Elohim made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

Fourth Reading (Aliyah 4)
Genesis 3:22–4:18
3:22 HaShem Elohim said: “Man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”
3:23 Therefore HaShem Elohim expelled him from the garden of Eden, to work the ground from which he had been taken.
3:24 He drove out humankind and placed at the east of the garden of Eden the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned continually, to guard the way to the tree of life.
Genesis 4
4:1 Adam knew Eve, his wife. She conceived and gave birth to Cain, and said, “I have acquired a man with the help of the Lord.”
4:2 Then she gave birth to his brother Abel. Abel was a shepherd, and Cain worked the land.
4:3 After some time, Cain presented to HaShem an offering of the fruit of the ground.
4:4 Abel also presented an offering of the firstborn of his flock and of its choicest parts. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering.
4:5 But he paid no attention to Cain or his offering. Cain became very angry, and his countenance fell.
4:6 HaShem asked Cain, "Why are you angry and why has your countenance fallen?"
4:7 If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is directed toward you, but you must master it.
4:8 Cain spoke with his brother Aebel. While they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Aebel and killed him.
4:9 The Lord asked Cain, “Where is your brother Abel?” He replied, “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
4:10 He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to me from the earth.
4:11 Now you are cursed from the ground that opened its mouth to receive from your hand the blood of your brother.
4:12 When you work the land, it will no longer give you its strength. You will be a wanderer and a fugitive on the earth.
4:13 Cain said to HaShem: "My punishment is too great to bear.
4:14 Today you are driving me from the face of the earth, and I will have to hide from your presence. I will be a wanderer and a fugitive on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.”
4:15 HaShem answered, “Therefore, whoever kills Cain will suffer vengeance seven times over.” HaShem put a mark on Cain so that no one who found him would kill him.
4:16 Cain went out from the presence of HaShem and lived in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
4:17 Cain knew his wife; she conceived and gave birth to Enoch. Cain built a city and named it after his son Enoch.
4:18 To Enoch was born Irad; Irad fathered Mehujael; Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered Lamech.

4:24 "If Cain is avenged seven times, then Lamech will be avenged seventy-seven times."
4:25 Adam knew his wife again, and she gave birth to a son and named him Seth, for he said, “God has granted me another offspring in place of Abel, whom Cain killed.”

Haftarah of Genesis
Isaiah 42:5–21 — Sephardic tradition
42:5 Thus says God, HaShem, who created the heavens and stretched them out; who spread out the earth and all that springs from it; who gives breath to the people who dwell on it and spirit to those who walk on it:
42:6 “I, HaShem, have called you in righteousness; I will hold your hand, protect you, and establish you as a covenant for the people and as a light for the nations;
42:7 to open the eyes of the blind, to bring the captives out of prison, and to free from the jail those who dwell in darkness.
42:8 I am HaShem; that is my name. I will not give my glory to another nor my praise to idols.
42:9 The first things have already been fulfilled, and now I announce new things; before they begin to spring forth, I make them known to you.
42:10 Sing to the Lord a new song; proclaim his praise from the ends of the earth: you who go down to the sea, and all that fills it, the islands, and all who dwell in them.
42:11 Let the desert and its cities raise their voices, the villages where Kedar dwells. Let the inhabitants of Sela sing and shout for joy from the mountain peaks.
42:12 Let them give glory to HaShem and proclaim His praise in the islands.
42:13 The Lord will go forth like a warrior; he will stir up his zeal like a man of battle. He will raise his voice, he will shout a war cry, and he will prevail over his enemies.
42:14 "I have kept silent for a long time; I remained quiet and restrained myself. Now I will scream like a woman giving birth; I will groan and gasp at the same time."
42:15 I will devastate mountains and hills, and dry up all their vegetation. I will turn rivers into islands and dry up ponds.
42:16 I will lead the blind by a way they have not known; I will guide them along unfamiliar paths. I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These things I will do for them and will not forsake them.
42:17 Those who trust in carved images and say to cast images, “You are our gods,” will turn back and be utterly ashamed.
42:18 Deaf, listen; blind, look so that you may see.
42:19 Who is blind but my servant? Who is deaf like the messenger I send? Who is blind like one who has been rewarded, and blind like the servant of the Lord?
42:20 You have seen many things, but you do not observe them; your ears are open, but you do not listen.
42:21 HaShem desired, for the sake of His justice, to magnify the Torah and make it glorious.
